A strange phenomenon has been happening in the hotel world over the last few weeks: A handful of luxury boutique hotels suddenly announced they were converting to popular points brands and joining a loyalty program.
Two of those are the iconic Turtle Bay Resort in Hawaii, which is changing into a Ritz-Carlton, and The Resort at Pelican Hill in California, which is becoming a St. Regis. While there are a lot of possible reasons why this is happening, like access to Marriott Bonvoy’s 200 million members, it’s a win for points and miles enthusiasts who can now (or soon) book these hotels with points.
Now the question is, what changes will happen next? And will we see even more independent hotels finally be bookable with points?
Hot tip: Even if your favorite luxury hotel isn’t part of a loyalty program, it may very well be part of a program like American Express’ Fine Hotels + Resorts that offers elitelike benefits (such as free breakfast, room upgrades and property credits) similar to having status with a program like Bonvoy or Hilton Honors.
