Hello from Hamburg, Germany, where I truly saw it all this week: a business-class seat with a huge, wraparound monitor; an onboard serve-yourself station to fill up your Stanley or Yeti water bottle; and virtual reality headsets that double as inflight entertainment.
I got a unique glimpse into what air travel might look like five, 10 or 15 years down the road as I spent three days wandering the halls of the Aircraft Interiors Expo — an aviation convention that’s all about the nuts, bolts, bells and whistles we enjoy and rely on every time we fly.
I got to sit in Southwest Airlines’ brand-new seats, which the airline unveiled this week. They’ll be on new jets starting in 2025. In real life, they’re a lot more comfortable than they looked in the first renderings that surfaced this past winter.
Already planning for that points redemption in 2030? You’ll probably be aiming for a private suite — not just a lie-flat seat. They’re already available on some carriers like Japan Airlines — but more and more airlines want to add them in the coming years.
That includes American Airlines, which showed off its soon-to-be-delivered single-aisle plane sporting its first-ever suites with privacy doors. This aircraft, the all-new Airbus A321XLR, also offers premium economy seats.
But most of us avid travelers aren’t looking to wait quite that long for our next redemption. Here are some ways to quickly earn points for that lie-flat seat (or suite, if you’re lucky):
