It’s been a busy year for airline route shake-ups. New routes are exciting and important to keep an eye on not only because they can open up the world more easily for those looking to go where the planes are going to fly, but new routes can also lead to some initial above-average award availability.
For example, shortly after TPG reported American Airlines would add a second daily flight to Rome this summer, I checked American’s website and — sure enough — there were not only well-priced awards available for summer travel but also two confirmable spaces to upgrade to business class with the airline’s valuable systemwide upgrades.
Speaking of Delta, this fall, it will fly more than 50 special one-time flights for college football fans, spinning up unusual routes for the airline, such as from Birmingham, Alabama, to Oklahoma City.
Meanwhile, United Airlines is betting that there’s demand for a new cross-country route to Southern California’s desert playground, Palm Springs.
TPG’s aviation team spends lots of time monitoring all of these new airline routes, but since they can provide great ways to use your miles, they should be on your radar whether or not you’re an AvGeek.
I’ll be sure to report back after my summer trip to Umbria, which is a great spot to consider if you want to head to Italy and avoid the bigger crowds in Rome.
