Memorial Day weekend travel started in full force before the weekend technically even began, with the TSA recording the second busiest day ever at U.S. airports on Thursday.
And whether you’re at home plotting your first big trip of the summer or already relaxing in the midst of a long weekend getaway, there are plenty of significant happenings in the travel, points and miles universe to tell you about this Sunday.
First of all, keep an eye on your email this week. We’ve learned some lucky Delta SkyMiles members have been targeted for complimentary Silver Medallion status upgrades — even if they didn’t qualify last year. Talk about some good news to start the summer!
Less encouraging news? The trip to and from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), will bring snarling traffic these next few months, airport leaders warn. That’s due to work that will completely overhaul the airport — new terminals and all.
Also not immune from traffic: the new buses — yes, buses — American Airlines is now deploying to additional cities in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Who knew you could book a flight and end up on the highway?
Meanwhile, far from the honking horns, we got our first look this week at Ritz-Carlton’s stunning second yacht, complete with 224 suites, private terraces and 24-hour in-room dining.
Finally, how about a sweet spot alert? Finnair recently adopted Avios as its loyalty currency and it’s yielding some impressive options for travelers looking for the best way to use their points and miles.
