I regret to inform you that financial scams are on the rise.
Rest assured, though, that in addition to providing the news, I also have tips to protect yourself and your money from fraud. So, let’s start with what you need to know: Fraudsters are using social engineering to steal others’ points and miles from their loyalty programs.
Unfortunately, this exact tale inspired a TPG story about one of our readers, who logged in to his Chase account only to see that all his Ultimate Rewards points had disappeared. Fraudsters had gained access to his personal information and transferred his points over the phone.
Other scams on the rise include romance scams and inheritance scams. Playing on the sympathy of others, fraudsters are even victimizing consumers through humanitarian relief scams.
You can take steps to lessen your chances of becoming a victim, including monitoring your account regularly, setting up account notifications and refraining from giving sensitive information over the phone, text, email or social media.
It’s important to also set up two-factor authentication on your accounts and not use the same password for multiple accounts.
You don’t have to live in fear; this is just a friendly reminder to protect your hard-earned points and money. For more safety tips, check out these stories:
