When we talk about credit card perks, we usually want to talk about the flashy ones — lounge access, statement credits, elite status and earning potential.
But if you’ve had a trip go awry, you know that a card’s travel protections can be one of its most valuable benefits.
We always hope that our travels go exactly as we plan, but anything from weather to illness to, say, a systemwide airline meltdown can get between you and your dream trip.
It’s frustrating when that happens, but if you have a card with good travel protections, you’ll have the silver lining of not having to fork over extra cash to deal with these interruptions. Whether your flight is delayed, your checked bags are lost or a rock cracks the windshield of your rental car, your credit card travel protections can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
What’s better: You don’t have to have something go wrong for these benefits to save you money. If you have a card with solid protections, you can confidently click “decline” when you’re booking travel and are asked if you want to protect your trip for a flat fee.
Yes, it looks scary when purchasing an airline ticket and seeing a message saying, “Your trip is not protected.” But if you booked with one of these credit cards, you can be confident that your travels will be insured by your card issuer’s plan.
