New cardmembers can earn five free night awards (each night valued at up to 50,000 points, and certain hotels have resort fees) after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months.
That’s an offer worth roughly $2,100 based on TPG’s valuations. Compare that with the card’s $95 annual fee.
Now, because Marriott Bonvoy uses dynamic pricing for award nights, we can’t say for sure what 50,000 points per night will get you, but some TPG staff have stayed at the Le Meridien Maldives (pictured above) or even the on-property Walt Disney World Swan Reserve.
However, I can tell you I used fewer points than that per night during stays last year at The Westin La Quinta Golf Resort & Spa on a mountain near Marbella, Spain … and at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa in Mexico.
Not to be overlooked: The card comes with automatic Silver elite status, which has modest benefits — but also puts you on the path to higher status with 15 annual elite night credits, plus an extra credit for each $5,000 you spend on the card. You will also earn 17 points per dollar spent at Marriott hotels.
