It’s the latest attempt by a set of U.S. airlines to supercharge their growth by combining. The Alaska-Hawaiian deal — which few saw coming — would make the combined company a juggernaut on flights between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.

Chief among them: Will the government allow it? The feds have already sued to block JetBlue’s proposed merger with Spirit Airlines and moved to block JetBlue’s Northeast Alliance pact with American Airlines. Now, the Department of Justice will have to decide whether to double down on its anti-consolidation stance with Alaska and Hawaiian.
For now, though, the airline industry will be left to catch its collective breath after Sunday’s bombshell announcement. But it appears that travel to Hawaii could be set for a major shake-up in the months ahead.
