AAA is forecasting that 4.69 million travelers will take to the friendly skies between Wednesday and Sunday, an increase of 6.6% over last year’s number.
In addition to busy airports and long waits at security checkpoints, TPG learned during a press conference led by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg this week that a stormy Thanksgiving weather forecast may lead to flight delays and cancellations.
Luckily, there are things you can do now to ensure your travels go as smoothly as possible … even in the face of delays, cancellations and Turkey Day crowds.
Check for travel alerts: Opt in to receive notifications from the airline regarding weather alerts and flight changes because it will give you the option to rebook or cancel your flight due to severe weather.
Pre-book your airport parking: When airports are busy, so are their parking lots. Many airports allow you to reserve your parking spot ahead of time, ensuring you aren’t left circling the lot when you arrive at the airport.
Know how to reach customer service: If you do run into travel trouble, hold times and airport lines can get painfully long. Keep this list of other ways to reach airline customer service handy.
Use the right credit card: If you have to buy the ticket, you might as well use a card that lets you earn points or miles, offers travel perks like credits for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck and provides travel protection for trip interruptions.
Pop an Apple AirTag into your luggage: If you end up on a different flight than originally planned, this will ensure you know if your bags made it on there with you. A four-pack of AirTags is currently on sale for one of the lowest prices we’ve seen.
Safe travels,
Tarah
