Consider how you'll use the card

by Katie Genter, Lead writer

If you’ve been trying to decide between The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, they both offer ample benefits and significant statement credits to cardmembers.

But if you’re debating between the two, it’s smart to consider which card will provide more value to you.

First, consider the differences in earning rates. If you prefer to book flights directly with airlines instead of through Amex Travel, the Amex Platinum may be a better fit. Likewise, the Business Platinum may be better if you frequently make purchases of $5,000 or more or in select business categories.

Next, look at the statement credits you can get each calendar year (you may need to enroll; some credits are offered monthly or biannually):

Amex Platinum: Up to $200 in prepaid hotel credit, up to $240 in digital entertainment credit, up to $155 in Walmart+ credit, up to $200 in Uber Cash, up to $100 in Saks Fifth Avenue credit and up to $300 in Equniox credit
Business Platinum: Up to $400 in Dell credit, up to $360 in Indeed credit, up to $150 in Adobe credit and up to $120 in U.S. wireless phone service provider credit

Finally, consider how you plan to redeem your points. If you’d use Pay with Points for flights through Amex Travel, the Business Platinum might be better since you’ll get 35% of the points you redeem back when you book your selected qualifying airline or a first- or business-class flight on any airline (up to 1 million points back per calendar year).
