Valuable sign-up bonuses

by Katie Genter, Lead writer

There are many reasons you might consider getting a new rewards credit card. But one aspect at the front of many travelers’ minds is the welcome offer or sign-up bonus.

The bonuses on some cards provide points, miles or cash-back rewards worth $1,000 or more once you reach the specified minimum spending requirements. The value you’ll get from these bonuses will vary depending on how you redeem your rewards, but we’ve valued the bonuses based on our points and miles valuations.

Offers change frequently. But The Platinum Card® from American Express currently offers 80,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8,000 on eligible purchases within the first six months of card membership. Based on our valuations, these points are worth $1,600.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card both offer 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening. Our valuations peg the value of these bonus miles at $1,388.

Meanwhile, the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred Card both offer 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. Based on our valuations, these bonus points are worth $1,200.

And if you’re interested in a small-business card, the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card currently offers 100,000 bonus points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first three months after account opening. These bonus points are worth $2,000 according to our valuations.
