Business cards to consider

by Emily Thompson, Partnerships and Newsletter Editor

In the business card arena, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card are two TPG favorites. Both earn bonus transferable points on common business expenses and come with helpful benefits. But in spite of these similarities, they’re very different cards. Here’s a quick overview to help you decide which is best for you.

The Amex Business Platinum currently has a welcome bonus of 120,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $15,000 on qualifying purchases in the first three months of card membership, and earns bonus points on eligible business purchases. It also comes with over $1,000 in available statement credits (enrollment in select benefits is required). Travel benefits include airport lounge access through the Global Lounge Collection and a 35% points rebate when you redeem Membership Rewards points for a flight through the Amex Travel portal.

However, these premium perks come with a premium price. Like its personal counterpart, the Amex Business Platinum sports a $695 annual fee, and if you want to add an authorized user, it’ll set you back an additional $350 per year.

The Ink Business Preferred, meanwhile, has a current sign-up bonus of 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first three months of card membership, and a fantastic earning structure: You’ll earn 3 points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent annually on eligible business and travel expenses. Additionally, you’ll get cellphone protection and many of Chase’s famous travel protections with this card. The list of benefits is shorter than that on the Amex Business Platinum, but the annual fee is just $95, and you can add employee cards for no additional cost.
