How to earn a Companion Pass

by Katie Genter, Lead writer

When my husband and I fly domestically, we often choose Southwest Airlines. Two free checked bags per person is appealing. But the primary reason we often fly Southwest is the airline’s Companion Pass.

Once you earn the Companion Pass, you can name one other traveler to fly with you on all your Southwest flights through the end of the next calendar year. All you need to do is pay the taxes and fees for each of your companion’s flights (just $5.60 for most domestic itineraries).

Earning the Companion Pass requires that you fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 135,000 qualifying points within a calendar year. But Southwest credit card sign-up bonuses count toward earning those qualifying points for the Companion Pass.

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business Credit Card currently offers a sign-up bonus of 60,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months from your account opening, plus an additional 60,000 points after you spend $15,000 on purchases in the first nine months.

But this bonus is ending soon. If you apply for the card now and spend $15,000 on your new card in the next few months — ensuring you reach the spending requirement and have all your points posted by the end of the year — you’d earn a Companion Pass valid through the end of 2024.

Or, you could wait to meet the second 60,000-point tier of the sign-up bonus in 2024 and have a good start toward earning a Companion Pass in 2024 that would be valid through the end of 2025.
