New airline routes

by Ben Mutzabaugh, Managing editor

Travel has roared back since the coronavirus pandemic began, and airlines have responded with a slew of exciting new routes.

American Airlines just announced a major European expansion, including three all-new destinations. United Airlines did the same for Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Delta Air Lines is gearing up for its largest Caribbean winter schedule ever and is adding new routes to Europe, New Zealand and South America. Even budget startup Avelo Airlines is joining the rush with its first-ever flights to the Caribbean.

International carriers are getting in on the mix, too. Perhaps the most intriguing of those routes comes from tiny carrier Atlantic Airways. Next month, the airline will begin flying between New York and the remote Faroe Islands, a Danish territory between Iceland and Norway that’s become a bucket-list destination for many adventure-seekers.

There’s also new Qantas service connecting Auckland, New Zealand, and New York — the 16-hour flight launched in June and now ranks as the world’s fifth-longest flight (alongside the same route its rival Air New Zealand launched last fall). Delta’s Latin America partner LATAM is expanding in the U.S. as well, with new routes to Peru, Brazil and Colombia.

European budget carrier Norse Atlantic is adding new routes to London, Paris and Berlin. At the other end of the spectrum, Taiwanese startup Starlux just launched new service to the U.S. with a business-class cabin that immediately ranks among the world’s best.

With all of these new routes coming online, there’s likely to be something for everyone. Here’s some more information to get you started when you’re ready to book that next flight:
