This has been a rough week for air travel in the U.S., especially in the northeast. And with a very busy July Fourth weekend ahead, it may take a while for things to settle down at some of the nation’s airports. To put numbers to it, since Sunday, there have been over 27,000 flight delays and 6,500 flight cancellations with more expected today.

As travelers scramble to get rebooked, all three major airlines have been experiencing multihour hold ordeals. Here are a few tips to help you get on your way:

Go to your airline’s lounge. The American Airlines Admirals Clubs, Alaska Airlines Lounges, Delta Air Lines Sky Clubs and United Airlines Clubs are generally staffed with customer service agents, and lines can be much shorter than in the terminal. If you don’t have a membership or an eligible ticket, buy a one-time pass.
Try a lesser-known way to reach your airline. Contact your airline’s foreign language desk if you speak a foreign language. I just called American’s and United’s French lines, and there’s no hold. You can also try contacting your airline through an international phone number or via instant messaging/social media.
Check your card’s travel interruption coverage. Several cards offer comprehensive travel interruption coverage if your airline has canceled your flight due to severe weather. These policies can cover additional transportation expenses such as meal, lodging and replacement flight expenses.

Before you head to the airport, be sure to check your flight status and make a plan. Travel safely.
