ALASKA MILK RUN

by Katie Genter, Lead writer

The Alaska Milk Run is a set of daily Alaska Airlines flights that serve communities in Southeast Alaska, many of which aren’t connected to the rest of the U.S. or Canada by roads. As such, these flights are critical for moving both people and cargo. And until 2017, Alaska flew a unique 737-400 Combi on these routes.

Earlier this month, my husband and I flew two of the Alaska Milk Run flights to visit all but one of the Milk Run airports. We flew Alaska Flight 65 from Seattle to Juneau via Ketchikan, Wrangell and Petersburg on a cloudy, rainy Friday. And after spending about 48 hours in Juneau, we flew Alaska Flight 61 from Juneau to Anchorage via Yakutat and Cordova on a relatively clear Sunday. And boy, the views from the right-hand side of the plane on Sunday were spectacular.

I expected to see other AvGeeks on our flights. Instead, we were mostly surrounded by Alaskans who seemed surprised that tourists fly these routes for fun. We even had a high school soccer team on several segments as they flew from Ketchikan to Juneau for a game.

Alaska Airlines recommends that you stay on board as a through passenger. But you can deplane at most stops if you’re willing to get a new boarding pass and reclear security. I enjoyed deplaning to see the small airports and stretch my legs.

Just like with the United Airlines Island Hopper, I’d happily take the Milk Run again – especially since we were both able to fly from Los Angeles to Anchorage for just $579.55 thanks to the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare.
