Airlines announce new service all the time, but there’s just something different when it’s United.
That was the case again Tuesday with United’s big annual “route drop,” when the airline unveiled the new overseas routes it’s adding to next year’s summer schedule.
The 2026 version was a real blockbuster: a whopping 10 international destinations added to United’s route map. All were under-the-radar destinations that had little — if any — nonstop service to the U.S.
Perhaps as interesting as the new routes, however, is the spectacle that United creates around its announcements — none more so than the big route drops.
United views itself as America’s premier global airline, adding a slew of wild new international destinations as it works to back that up.
Those destinations are also partially driven by a desire to add aspirational award destinations for MileagePlus members to spend their miles — and maybe sign up for one of the airline’s credit cards.
Whatever the reason, something of a cult following has emerged around it. United’s “route drop” day is now one of the most anticipated of the year by a set of United’s top-tier loyalists, who now show up by the dozens for many of United’s inaugural flights to its new overseas destinations.
Several loyalists even showed up to Tuesday’s Newark event just for a chance to be part of it.
“You can’t buy this type of publicity,” one United executive told me inside the hangar.
