JetBlue is trimming flights and grounding some of its older planes. Another airline has shut down altogether. And United Airlines just completed a historic inaugural flight to a country never before served by a U.S. airline — yes, again.
Now, if it seems like we just told you about a new United route to a country no U.S. airline had ever served before … we did. It was just about a month ago that United flew its inaugural flight to Mongolia amid a great deal of fanfare. TPG’s Sean Cudahy, who was on that Greenland inaugural, tells us what it was like — and explains how it all fits in to United’s ambitious global expansion effort.
Switching to JetBlue, its move to shrink its operation in 2025 comes as the carrier has struggled to return to profitability. The airline hopes that cutting unprofitable routes and flying less on off-peak days will allow it to focus on routes with the highest potential to make money. Reporter Edward Russell has all the details for TPG.
While JetBlue is making a pivot, there was no such luck for Silver Airways, which suspended all flights last week. Silver was a small player, but — thanks to partnerships with United and JetBlue — the shutdown of the Florida-based regional carrier will be noticed beyond its home markets.
Of course, that’s not all the news that broke since our last newsletter. Among those headlines was a set of new routes announced by Allegiant Air — a story that will likely be one of our most-viewed aviation stories of the month.
