Earn 5% back on United Airlines purchases with Chase Offers
Chase Offers are targeted discounts for purchases you might make anyway. They are similar to Amex Offers in that you must add each offer to your card before making your purchase. Once you’ve satisfied the offer’s terms, the discount will be automatic. You can find available Chase Offers by logging into your Chase online account.
If you’re one of the lucky targeted cardholders, you can save 5% when you spend at least $50 on United Airlines purchases — with the following stipulations:
- You can earn a maximum of $36 back with this offer. That means you’ll only earn 5% cash back for up to $720.
- The offer states that it is to be used for “United Airlines ticket purchase.”
- The offer expires Aug. 1, 2022. You don’t have to take your trip by Aug. 1; you just have to purchase your flights.
- This is a one-time offer. You won’t get 5% back for multiple purchases.

It’s worth noting that several United Airlines credit cards come with the first checked bag free for you and a travel buddy on your itinerary — but you must pay with your United Airlines credit card to get this benefit. If you’re targeted for this Chase Offer on a credit card other than a United Airlines card, it may be worth ignoring this offer if you’ll have to forfeit free checked bags.
United charges $30 each way for checked bags. If you’re in the habit of checking bags, a 5% return on your ticket is almost certainly not the better deal.
In theory, you could purchase a United Economy ticket for the future and then cancel it as a means of effectively purchasing United credit at a discount. United allows you to change or cancel your flights for free (as long as they’re not in Basic Economy). You could purchase a $720 fare, cancel it and receive $720 in credits for $684. This could be a good option if you intend to pay for United flights in the future.

Bottom line
Targeted Chase credit cardholders can earn 5% back on United Airlines flights, with a cap of $36. The offer expires Aug. 1, 2022, so you’ve got one week to use this Chase Offer. Just remember: If you’re planning to check a bag, it’s likely better to use your cobranded United card to make the purchase — even if it doesn’t come with the current offer.

Why We Chose It
There's a lot to love about the Amex Gold card.
