NYC Uber Riders Can Commute for as Low as $1.98 per Ride This Summer

Update 2: The Uber Commute Card will be available for purchase through July 29.
Update: The original version of this post indicated that the two-week July passes were sold out. However, a Gilt City rep reached out and clarified that was just for presale passes. As of this update, there are passes available in the two-week, four-week and eight-week categories for both July and August.
Earlier this year, Uber announced it was going to offer New York City commuters flat $5 UberPool rides Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00am-10:00am and 5:00pm-8:00pm. Later, in Boston, the company announced it was going to allow passengers to purchase an UberPool pass for a flat rate in July. Now, Uber is allowing passengers in New York City to purchase what it's calling the Commute Card, a product that lets users choose a period of time for an unlimited number of UberPool rides in Manhattan during weekday commuting hours.
Uber is also targeting certain passengers for a presale, but it appears even those who weren't targeted can sign up through this promotion with Gilt City. Keep in mind that there are an extremely limited number of passes available — as of this writing, the two-week unlimited Commute Card for July was already sold out.

Here are the passes available for the presale:
- Two weeks: $49 — in theory, you can select July or August, but July is currently sold out
- Four weeks: $79 — You can select July or August
- Eight weeks: $159
Keep in mind that these are for UberPool rides, so there is a possibility you'll be sharing the car with a stranger (or two), especially during commuter hours. Also note that these can only be used for rides that begin and end in Manhattan below 125th St., so if you live in an outer borough, this isn't the deal for you. Your pass will begin when you take your first ride and must be completed by July 31 or August 31, depending on which pass you get.
Ultimately, the Commute Card is a great deal if you take Uber to work during regular commuter hours. If you purchase the two-week pass, each ride will cost $2.45, and for the four-week pass each ride will cost $1.98 — both being less than a ride on the subway ($2.75). Don't forget to sync a credit card with your account that will give you the most return, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred with 2x points on travel, including on Uber rides.
