Despite a 2018 switch to dynamic pricing that removed a lot of value, Flying Blue — the loyalty program of Air France, KLM and several other carriers — still offers some decent redemption options. One of the best is by taking advantage of monthly discounted promo awards, which offer 25-50% award tickets on select flights. However, if you’re looking for an even greater discount and can book right now, Flying Blue has launched a limited-time set of promo awards bookable for the next three days.
As first reported by View from the Wing, you can book fall flights to Europe from select US cities for as little as 12,500 miles each way as long as the reservation is made in the next three days — May 22-24 — and the flights take place between September 1 and December 12. And other flights are discounted even further.
You can view the full list of cities at this link, but the most compelling options for US-based travelers are Chicago-O’Hare (ORD) and Washington-Dulles (IAD). You can fly from either city to any destination in Europe for only 12,500 miles each way in economy on either Air France or KLM. Or, you could fly from Panama City (PTY) to Europe for only 40,000 miles each way in business class.
These promotional prices appear online, and award availability is wide open, with plenty of days showing the 12,500-mile pricing. Flying Blue awards often come with relatively high fuel surcharges, but these economy awards are more reasonable, with only ~$85 in taxes. Since the switch to dynamic pricing, Flying Blue promo awards have been presented as a percentage discount off that day’s pricing. This is the first time in a while that we’ve seen promo awards for a fixed mileage value, and this is an incredible deal to boot.
Note that there are several other cities on the list as well, including several intra-European flights for as low as 3,000 miles each way, so be sure to review the full list to see if any of them correspond with your plans. And as always, compare the paid rates on your desired date(s) of travel to make sure you’re getting a solid value for your award ticket.
TPG values Flying Blue miles at 1.2 cents each, meaning you’re spending $150 worth of miles for a flight to Europe ($300 round-trip). And the good news is that Flying Blue miles are some of the easiest to earn, as they partner with all of the major transferable points currencies. You can transfer points 1:1 from Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards. You can also transfer Capital One miles to Flying Blue at a 2:1.5 ratio or transfer Marriott points at a 3:1 ratio plus a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points you transfer.
Note that Amex, Chase, Citi and Capital One all should process these transfers instantly based on our tests, so you won’t need to worry about the points not arriving right away. Our test transfer from Marriott, on the other hand, took 3 days to arrive in our Flying Blue account, so for the purposes of this promotion, I’d recommend sticking with one of the credit card programs.
If you’re feeling burned by the trend towards dynamic pricing, jump on this promotion and relive the glory days of fixed award charts. Economy flights to Europe for only 12,500 miles each way is one of the lowest rates we’ve seen, but remember that the clock is ticking on this promotion. Make sure to book by May 24 (for travel from Sept. 1 through Dec. 12) to lock in this incredible deal.
