Can I Earn Hyatt Status at M Life Properties in Las Vegas?

TPG reader Victor sent me a message on Facebook to ask about a shortcut to earning Hyatt status:
"I read that Hyatt Diamond status translates to M Life Platinum status, but does this work the other way around? I'll likely reach M Life Platinum on my next visit to Las Vegas, and I'm planning a honeymoon at the Andaz in Costa Rica, so it would be great if I could boost my Hyatt status and maybe score an upgrade there!"
The resort casinos on the Las Vegas Strip have their own loyalty programs, but thanks to several partnerships launched over the past few years, you can earn points and elite credits with major hotel brands during your stay. Your existing elite status may also carry over to Vegas properties, so you can receive benefits or even be granted status outright.
Hyatt teamed up with M Life Rewards (the loyalty program of MGM Resorts International) back in 2013, giving Gold Passport members more opportunities at Vegas properties like Bellagio, Aria and Mandalay Bay. Each level of Hyatt elite status translates to an M Life membership tier: as Victor mentioned, Hyatt Diamond members get M Life Platinum status, while Hyatt Platinum members get M Life Gold.
Unfortunately, this partnership isn't purely reciprocal, and M Life status doesn't translate into Hyatt Gold Passport status at any level. In fact, M Life members get very little out of the deal other than the option to earn tier credits at Hyatt properties, which isn't that useful anyway (since you have to forego Hyatt points in the process). This might seem imbalanced, but it makes sense because Hyatt Diamond status is so valuable.
On the bright side, you can earn Hyatt points for each dollar spent on your room rate and eligible incidentals at M Life properties. Furthermore, eligible stays (mostly paid stays booked through Hyatt or MGM) will earn elite night and stay credits toward Gold Passport status. That won't get you to Diamond status unless you're spending a lot of time in Vegas, but every bit helps.
If your qualifying stays in Vegas aren't enough, there are other shortcuts to Hyatt status. For starters, the Hyatt Credit Card offers automatic Platinum status, and gives you the chance to earn more stay and night credits as a spending bonus. Hyatt also sometimes offers opportunities to match or challenge to Diamond status, which is a great option if you have upcoming stays planned.
