Can I Book One-Way AAdvantage Awards Using US Airways Miles?

TPG reader Daniel emailed me to ask:
"I have US Airways Dividend Miles, and I was wondering if I could use them to book a one-way award ticket on American Airlines?"
Strictly speaking, the answer is yes — you can book a one-way award, but unfortunately, it will cost you the same as a round-trip award. When the two frequent flyer programs merge sometime in April, May or June (still no exact date), US Airways miles will become AAdvantage miles, and then you'll be able to book one-way awards at half the cost of a round-trip.
Until then, you'll have to deal with US Airways routing rules, but don't let that discourage you. US Airways has some amazing deals, and many US Airways redemptions cost a lot less than AAdvantage redemptions (see Jason Steele's recent post for 10 Great Ways to Use Dividend Miles). Take advantage of those options soon, before they go away forever!
