Amex Offer: Earn 5,000 Membership Rewards Points or Cash Back at Marriott and Hilton Hotels
Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here.
For anyone who's got an upcoming stay at either a Hilton or Marriott, you'll want to take a close look at these new Amex Offers.
The first can earn you 5,000 Amex Membership Rewards Points after spending $250 or more at three Hilton chains. You'll have to spend at least $250 at either Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites or Home2 to earn the bonus points.
5,000 points are worth $95 according to TPG's valuations, so that's about a 38% return on $250 in spend. There also is a similar offer that gives $50 back after spending $250 at any of the three hotel brands. This deal must be added to your card and completed by November 15, 2018, (although reservations can be made for dates after Nov. 15).
There's a second, solid Amex offer floating around for Marriott hotels, which recently merged its rewards program with SPG. You can earn $60 back after spending $300 or more at participating Marriott properties.

The offer is only valid at "participating Marriott® brands in the US and US territories, including: JW Marriott®, Autograph Collection®, Renaissance® Hotels, Marriott Hotels®, Delta Hotels®, Gaylord Hotels®, AC Hotels by Marriott®, Courtyard®, Residence Inn®, SpringHill Suites®, Fairfield Inn by Marriott®, TownePlace Suites® and Moxy® Hotels." So luxury properties like the St. Regis or W Hotels are off limits, and you'll be confined to domestic travel. This deal must be added to your card and completed by October 25, 2018, (although reservations can be made for dates after Oct. 25).
Both of the offers will only work if you book directly with either of the hotel chains through their website, mobile app or over the phone. Amex warns that mobile wallet transactions may not qualify.
Because you have to book direct to receive the deal, that means you'll earn either Hilton or Marriott points depending on where you're staying. Hilton and Marriott elite members will also receive perks like room upgrades and bonus points on stays. If you hold a card like the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express or Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express, you'll earn bonus points for the hotel transaction on top of the cash back you'd receive from the Amex Offer.
If you see the Marriott offer on the new Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card, it should stack with the $300 credit that works at Marriott properties — leading to a total of $360 back.
These deals are targeted, but I saw the Marriott offer on both on my Business Platinum Card® from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. Other TPG staff members saw both offers in their accounts — so it appears to be pretty widespread.
To enroll, log in to your AmericanExpress.com account and scroll down to the “Amex Offers and Benefits” section and click “Add to Card” to card to complete the registration.
