Hotel Review: Park Hyatt Hamburg — Park Suite King
Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here – The Hyatt Credit Card
TO THE POINT: We loved staying at the Park Hyatt Hamburg, especially after scoring a $244 rebate thanks to Citi Prestige's 4th Night Free benefit. The pros: A great location near the city center, spacious accommodations and friendly staff. The cons: none, this hotel was great!
Here, TPG Points & Miles Editor Sarah Silbert reviews a recent stay at the Category 4 Park Hyatt Hamburg in northern Germany.
Back in early April, TPG Editor-in-Chief Zach Honig and I traveled to Hamburg for the Aircraft Interiors Expo. The trip offered the opportunity to check out the new Airbus A330neo Airspace cabin and preview a concept for next-generation seatback entertainment. It was also a great chance to stay at the conveniently located Park Hyatt Hamburg.
Booking
The Park Hyatt Hamburg is a Category 4 property that'll cost you 15,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points for a free night in a standard room and 24,000 points per night for a suite. That's a relative bargain compared to other Park Hyatt properties, such as the Category 7 Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme, which starts at 30,000 points per night (48,000 for a suite).
However, you might want to consider paying with cash instead since rates, even during the Aircraft Interiors Expo, were quite reasonable: $244 per night including taxes. Thanks to the 4th Night Free benefit from the Citi Prestige Card, we also got a $244 rebate. We booked a seven-night stay in a standard room and applied a Diamond Suite upgrade, which is good for stays of up to seven nights and can be paired with the previously mentioned 4th Night Free perk. We were upgraded at booking to a Park Suite King room — an especially nice perk considering most of the hotel was already booked by companies attending the Expo.

There are also a few credit card options that can get you free nights at this hotel. First, there's the Hyatt Credit Card, which is currently offering a sign-up bonus of two free nights at any Hyatt property worldwide when you spend $2,000 on the card in the first three months, plus an annual free night at any Category 1-4 hotel after your cardmember anniversary. The card has an annual fee of $75. Second, you could earn Ultimate Rewards points with a variety of Chase credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and the Ink Plus Business Card and then transfer those points to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio to redeem award nights. Note that while either of these options could come in handy when you're short on cash, the relatively low rates at this particular property mean paying cash could make more sense in many cases.
Check-In

The Park Hyatt Hamburg is just around the corner from a bustling shopping area — you can even enter the hotel through a high-end mall. If you arrive by taxi, though, you'll likely be dropped off at the main entrance on the other side of the street. In either case, you may be confused by the building's signage, which indicates that the property is a Hyatt rather than a Park Hyatt. I was thrown off and even asked my taxi driver if we were in the right location, but indeed we were.

Once you're inside the hotel, you'll need to take an elevator to the main check-in level.

After walking through the hall, you'll find friendly agents at the desk and another bank of elevators to take you to your room. Check-in took only a couple of minutes, and the staff were more than happy to accommodate an early-morning arrival.

The Room
Our Park Suite King room was located on the seventh floor, and it didn't disappoint with its clean design and spacious layout. Most Park Hyatt properties offer their own twist on an upscale, modern aesthetic, and though the Hamburg location doesn't offer any extra-special touches, like the statue fixtures found throughout the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme, the decor is still attractive, with plenty of wooden accents — and if anything, the light colors make the space feel roomier.

Upon entering the suite, the first thing you'll see is the living room area, which includes a desk, a TV, a sofa and chair, a coffee table and a cabinet housing the mini-bar. The sofa ended up being a great place to get some work done.

Our room also included a Samsung Galaxy tablet, which offered some information about Hamburg and the hotel. I imagine it would have been more useful if we had left our laptops and smartphones at home.

Our view (of a courtyard) wasn't much to speak of, but we did get a fair amount of light, and facing away from the street helped eliminate any traffic noise at night.

Heading back inside, you'll find an espresso machine in the living room, complete with complimentary pods. The cabinets are also stocked with cups, glasses and tea bags. The cabinet is also home to the mini-bar, which is far from cheap but definitely more affordable than the offerings at properties like the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme (think 4.50 euros for a soda rather than 13).

After check-in, housekeeping staff came by with some fruit and cookies as well.

The bedroom is located behind the living room area and can be separated with sliding wooden doors (helpful if one of the guests in your party is an earlier riser). The King bed was comfortable and the thick curtains did a good job at blocking out light and noise from outside.

There's also a huge closet, which offers plenty of storage space, plus robes, an iron and ironing board and an umbrella (which came come in handy in springtime).

Also separated from the bedroom by a sliding door, the bathroom is huge and includes a shower, tub, toilet and two sinks with plenty of space in between.

Though you can't see it in the photo, the shower and bath are separated from the rest of the space with glass, so luckily there were no issues with water leaking onto the rest of the floor.

The bathroom was stocked with L'Occitane toiletries, including lotion and bath products from the French company's Verbena line.

The amenities have a fresh citrus smell — nothing too perfume-y, which many guests will appreciate.

Food and Other Amenities
As Hyatt Diamond members, we were able to enjoy breakfast in the room, which is a great perk, especially since we were able to order pretty much anything we wanted from the entire menu. Each day, breakfast was served with a great selection of fresh bread, including a very tasty pretzel roll. The "forest juice" is also worth a try — it's essentially a berry smoothie, but room-service staff called it by this name, which somehow made it even better.

The Park Hyatt Hamburg also offers Diamond guests drinks and canapés each evening in its seventh-floor lounge. It's a nice spot to hang out, though it was very busy during our stay due to the fact that so many companies were staying at the property for the Aircraft Interiors Expo.

Finally, the hotel offers a gym in the basement. Given its underground location, it's rather dark, though the hotel does compensate with some pretty intense overhead lighting.

Bottom Line
The Park Hyatt Hamburg may not be the fanciest or most unique property in Hyatt's top-of-the-line brand, but it's a great place to stay, thanks to comfortable, spacious accommodations, overall friendly staff and a good location for exploring the city center. Best of all, it's one of the most affordable Park Hyatts around, and by maximizing perks like the Citi Prestige Card's 4th Night Free, you can really get some good value out of a stay here.
