The options may differ from those in the United States, but Canadians with wanderlust have no shortage of rewards-earning credit cards. Whether you're looking for cash back, nearly-free flights or hotel stays, there are credit cards that can help you accomplish your travel goals.

There are other options to consider as well. Are you looking for a card with no annual fee or are you willing to pay a fee to get premium perks like lounge access at airports?

The best travel credit cards — in Canada or anywhere else — should come with a welcome bonus after completing a spending requirement and should offer benefits that justify keeping that card in your wallet year after year. Let's look at the best options for Canadians and highlight what we like about each of these cards.

Plus, earn 2,5000 bonus points for each billing period in which you spend $500 or more on purchases during the first six months of cardmembership.

Annual fee: $120.

Why we like it: A free checked bag for 10 people (you and up to nine companions) could easily cost more than $120, so using this perk once a year could easily justify the annual fee. Additionally, those pursuing Aeroplan elite status can accelerate through progress by spending on the Amex Aeroplan card. Cardmembers also get access to valuable American Express perks.

There are additional perks with the Rocky Mountaineer, such as bonus earning rates, seat upgrades and even room upgrades on train packages that include a hotel. Why we like it: Earning rates are strong, offering 5 points per dollar on a broad travel category and 3 points per dollar on dining, entertainment and recurring bill payments — categories in which many people spend regularly. Additionally, there are premium insurance perks to help in case something goes wrong during your trip, and you'll also get four free visits per year to airline lounges. The points your earn are flexible, allowing you to redeem points against a wide range of travel purchases or redeem your points for a deposit into a BMO savings or investment account.

Bottom line

Whether you're looking for a card with premium perks or no annual fee, there should be something for everyone as you review the top travel credit cards in Canada.

From the chart above and the reasons why we like each of these cards, look for cards that offer the benefits you want while charging an annual fee acceptable to you. It's also worth looking for cards that earn bonus points or extra cash back in categories where you spend regularly. Once you find a card (or cards) to match your travel style, travel goals and spending habits, read the details before applying.

Also, ensure you understand how to earn the welcome bonus since you don't want to lose out on that.
