Quick Points: Oneworld Emeralds, you have access to an incredible ground experience in London
After earning Oneworld Emerald status through a Hyatt-American Airlines status challenge last year, the status quickly became a game changer on my international flights. Oneworld Emerald members receive benefits like preferred seating and complimentary access to many first-class lounges on eligible itineraries — two notable perks that Star Alliance Gold status doesn't offer.
A few weeks ago, I flew from London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Italy's Naples International Airport (NAP) on British Airways. On my departure from London, I was very impressed by a lesser-known Oneworld Emerald perk: first-class ground services.
Here's a closer look at British Airways' first-class check-in at its Heathrow hub.
British Airways first-class check-in

When facing the Terminal 5 check-in desks, you'll find the first-class check-in to the far right of the departure hall.
You'll pass by Club Europe and Club World (business class) check-in counters with Oneworld status logos. You'll only see the Oneworld Emerald logo at the first-class check-in area.

The private check-in area for British Airways first-class passengers was well-staffed with numerous unoccupied desks, resulting in no wait time. This area is solely designated for Oneworld first-class travelers and Emerald members, so business-class passengers without Oneworld Emerald will need to visit a separate check-in area in the main departure hall.
Right away, I appreciated the design and atmosphere of the area. Some comfortable lounge chairs were available for those not at the check-in desk, and a waiter went around serving a selection of either still or sparkling water while luggage was labeled for final destinations.

Once my luggage was checked, I reached the security checkpoint conveniently located within the first-class check-in area.
In contrast to my previous encounters at Heathrow, the security process was serene and seamless.

The true standout feature of British Airways' first-class check-in was the exclusive access to the first-class Galleries lounge via a private hallway.

British Airways Galleries lounge

The British Airways Galleries lounge is a lovely space to wait for a flight. It features ample seating and sleeping pods, plus shower facilities for those who want to freshen up before their flight.

At each table, you'll notice a QR code allowing passengers to order food and drink for delivery to their seats. The lounge also has a full buffet with plenty of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.
Since it was midafternoon, British Airways provided a full spread of sandwiches and scones for afternoon tea on the buffet during my visit. Naturally, given the London location, there were several afternoon tea essentials, too, including berry jam and clotted cream.

Bottom line
What I expected to be an unremarkable two-hour flight to Naples was a delight thanks to the first-class check-in experience at Heathrow.
American Airlines Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum members and Alaska Gold 75K and Gold 100K members receive Oneworld Emerald status and therefore access to this first-class check-in area, so if you're a Oneworld Emerald member, be sure to try British Airways' first-class check-in the next time you depart from Heathrow.
