Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available.

As Benjamin Franklin said, nothing is certain but death and taxes.

While the certainty of tax season can be unwelcome, there's a silver lining: You may be able to save money or earn bonus points when paying for tax preparation services.

Through targeted offers from your credit card issuer, you could earn extra points or cash back on the cost of preparing your taxes. As these are targeted offers, not everyone will see the same ones. And what's available on one of your cards may not be available on others — so it's worth checking all your cards.

Here are the offers we're seeing right now.

Amex Offers

You could earn extra Membership Rewards points or cash back with select tax preparation services through targeted Amex Offers. The following offers may be available on your cards:

  • Jackson Hewitt Tax Prep (File Online Yourself): Spend $25 or more, get $5 back (expires April 18).
  • TaxAct: Get 5 additional Membership Rewards points per dollar, with a maximum of 2,000 points (expires April 18).
  • TaxAct: Get 30% back, with a maximum of $60 back (expires April 18).
  • TurboTax and TurboTax Live: Spend $50 or more, get $10 back (expires May 15).
  • TurboTax and TurboTax Live: Spend $90 or more, get $20 back (expires May 15).

Capital One Offers

Unlike other merchant offers, Capital One Offers do not have specific end dates. They're also unique in another way: You need to follow a link in the offer that will take you to the merchant's website, and you must complete your transaction there to receive credit.

Check your Capital One account for these offers:

  • H&R Block Tax Prep: 6% back.
  • TaxAct: 8% back.
  • TaxSlayer: Up to 41% back.
  • TurboTax: 13% back.

Chase Offers

Out of all credit card rebate programs, Chase Offers tend to have the shortest deadline before expiration. Thus, you should check your accounts regularly for new offers.

We found these Chase Offers related to taxes:

  • TurboTax: Get $10 back on an Intuit TurboTax purchase, plus up to $15 in extra savings when using this link (expires April 18).
  • TaxAct: Get $7 back (expires April 30).

Citi Merchant Offers

Like with other programs, you must add Citi Merchant Offers to your card before using them. Otherwise, you won't receive the bonus cash back.

Check your accounts for these tax-related offers:

  • TurboTax: Get $10 back on a single transaction, plus up to $20 in extra savings when using this link (expires April 18).
  • TaxAct: Get 25% back on a single transaction, up to a maximum of $60 back (expires April 30).

Bottom line

Whether you prepare your taxes online yourself or pay someone else to do them for you, you could get extra points or cash back on your expenses through the offers on your credit card. Not everyone will see the same offers, so it's worth checking all your credit cards to find the best offer available to you. Remember that you need to add the offers to your credit card and then pay with that card; otherwise, you won't earn the extra points or cash back.
