Sample flights
For this fall sale, Air Canada's website doesn't specify the savings available but lists "sale fares" for specific routes. It's up to you to decide whether any given flight offers enough of a discount to rush to purchase in the next couple of days. However, depending on your city of origin and travel dates, some of these flights are worth considering.
The fare sale ends on Sept. 14, so you'll need to act quickly to book the potential savings.
San Francisco to Vancouver
For this sale, Air Canada flights from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) this fall begin at $70 one-way for a nonstop flight in late September.
Typical Air Canada pricing for non-sale dates runs between $170 and $230 for this route, so the $70 one-way deal offers some nice savings.
Return flights, however, begin at $107 during this sale, so you won't be able to get the lowest advertised fare for both directions.
Still, $176 is a good deal for a round-trip flight between the two cities. And for Air Canada's basic economy fare, you'll still be able to bring a carry-on bag at no extra charge. However, there are additional fees for seat selection, checked bags and meal service.
New York to Toronto
For this Air Canada fall flight sale, one-way tickets from New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) begin at just $75, which is 50% off typical rates for the route. Return tickets start at $118, so you'll be paying a little more for the round-trip ticket, but this is still a good offer at $192.
Flights are still available for reasonable flight times during the day, with wide availability across dates from fall through winter and next spring. The dates of travel are typically midweek for the best fares, but you may be able to find some weekend availability as well.
The basic economy fare class in the sample above does not allow changes to the itinerary and is nonrefundable for cash or credit. The fare only allows 25% Aeroplan mileage points and does not give credit for Air Canada status qualifying miles.
Maximize your purchase
Use a card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases. The Platinum Card® from American Express earns 5 points per dollar spent on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year.
The Citi Premier® Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve earn 3 points per dollar spent on airfare, while the American Express® Gold Card earns 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card earns 2 points per dollar spent on travel. Read TPG’s guide to maximizing airfare purchases.
Bottom line
Air Canada's fall fare sale provides some good savings opportunities for travel between the U.S. and Canada. While the specific savings is not spelled out in the promotion, you'll be able to find up to 50% discounts on selected flights during the sale period.
The sale fares are in Air Canada's basic economy class, which allows carry-on bags but does not allow changes or refunds to your itinerary.
The fall fare sale only lasts through Sept. 14, so search and book quickly if you're thinking of flying north this autumn.
