When choosing a premium credit card, it's important to consider which card best meets your needs. Since these cards all charge annual fees in the hundreds (with some approaching $1,000 a year), you don't want to find yourself in a situation where you're struggling to get enough value out of the one you choose.
I currently hold two premium credit cards, the American Express Platinum Card® and Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see ). Both of these cards provide me with much more value than I pay in annual fees, but that may not be the case for everyone.
Let's take a deeper look at how popular premium credit cards compare, and what characteristics of each you'll want to look closely at when deciding which is right for you.
All of the valuations discussed in this article are based on TPG's September 2026 valuations and are not determined by the card issuer.
Popular premium credit cards compared
Here are the nine premium credit cards included in our comparison:
Methodology for comparing the best premium credit cards
For this comparison, I'll compare these cards across seven categories:
Annual fee
Current welcome offer
Potential to earn points
Redemption options
Statement credits and notable perks
Lounge access
Travel and purchase protections
This analysis is based on a typical traveler deciding which of these cards is right for them. Since premium credit cards offer different perks and benefits, the card that's right for your wallet depends on your specific needs.
Premium credit cards make sense for frequent travelers who can take advantage of their travel-related benefits. Since these cards come with annual fees in the hundreds, it's very important that you get the most value out of them every year.
If you're only traveling a handful of times each year, a mid-tier or no-annual-fee card may make more sense for you.
Find out your offer and see if you are eligible for as high as 175,000 bonus points after spending $12,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership. (Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.)
Earn two domestic round-trip Delta Comfort Flight Certificates (valid for travel to the U.S. 48, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands) and 50,000 bonus miles after spending $10,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership. A 21+ day advance purchase is required; up to $80 per person in taxes and fees apply. Other restrictions apply. Offer ends Nov. 4.
$600 in miles, plus the value of the two round-trip Delta Comfort flight certificates
Earn up to 100,000 bonus miles: Earn 90,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. Plus, earn 10,000 bonus miles after adding an authorized user in the first three months from account opening.
Up to $1,200 (including the points from adding an authorized user)
Premium transferable rewards cards compared
Annual fee
When you're considering a premium credit card, you're not going to be able to get away from a high annual fee. That's the cost of receiving top-tier travel and lifestyle benefits.
The Amex Platinum charges the highest annual fee out of the transferable rewards cards we're comparing, at $895. The Venture X is by far the most affordable, at $395 per year.
DELMAINE DONSON/GETTY IMAGES
In my view, the Venture X is a great option for a first premium credit card, since it is the most affordable and its annual fee is easily offset by its annual $300 Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 bonus miles.
Currently, according to our valuations, the Amex Platinum's welcome offer is by far the most valuable available among the premium transferable rewards credit cards we're comparing. However, not everyone will be targeted for the highest offer, and it comes with a steep spending requirement: $12,000 in the first six months of card membership.
The welcome offers that come with transferable rewards cards tend to be more valuable, since the points or miles they earn are more flexible thanks to transfer partners.
The Amex Platinum focuses heavily on travel, earning 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel® (on the first $500,000 in purchases each calendar year, then 1 point per dollar spent). The Venture X is a great choice for nonbonus spending, since it earns at least 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases.
All four of the transferable rewards cards we're comparing offer access to transfer partners. Which issuer's transfer partner list is more compelling is highly subjective and depends entirely on your own travel habits. It's worth paying attention to exclusive transfer partners, since they may swing the needle in a certain issuer's direction.
You can redeem your rewards for things like gift cards, statement credits and travel through an issuer portal with all of these cards, but none of them provide exceptional value through these methods.
The one exception is when you redeem your Sapphire Reserve points for travel that's eligible for Points Boost; through this method, you can receive up to 2.5 cents per point in value.
Given their high annual fees, all the transferable rewards cards we're comparing offer statement credits to help offset them. The Chase Sapphire Reserve and Amex Platinum offer the most statement credits between these four cards, with most of them allocated monthly, quarterly, semiannually or annually.
Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits.
The statement credits on the Sapphire Reserve and Amex Platinum are generally tied to specific merchants, with a notable exception being the Sapphire Reserve's up to $300 annual travel credit. If you're not interested in putting in a lot of work to maximize benefits with very specific terms, neither of these cards will be a great fit for you.
The Venture X and Strata Elite have a simpler roster of benefits. The Venture X is by far the easiest to maximize for most, since you can offset its annual fee with its up to $300 annual Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 anniversary bonus miles alone.
The Amex Platinum features the most extensive lounge access of any of the cards we're comparing. As a snapshot, you'll get access to Amex's Centurion Lounges as well as Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Escape lounges (enrollment required for Priority Pass).
You'll also be able to enter Delta Sky Clubs when flying on a same-day Delta flight (limited to 10 visits per year; resets annually on Feb. 1; unless you spend $75,000 or more on your card in a calendar year; basic economy tickets excluded).
ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY
It's worth noting that the Strata Elite has the most limited lounge access of these four cards, since Citi currently lacks an issuer lounge network. In exchange, you'll receive four Admirals Club lounge passes each year. While you'll still get a Priority Pass membership, the Strata Elite is not the best choice for anyone seeking extensive lounge access.
Since the Citi / AAdvantage Executive offers unlimited Admirals Club access, it's a better option for American Airlines fans.
Given this, your choice will likely come down to which airline you fly with most.
Welcome offer
Currently, the AAdvantage Executive Mastercard's welcome offer provides the most value in miles according to our valuations, but the Delta Reserve's offer may be more appealing to those who frequently fly within the United States.
Since the rewards you earn on airline cards are more limited than transferable rewards, the welcome offer you find the most valuable will come down to which airline you fly with the most, and whether you can take advantage of partner bookings with a certain airline.
Rewards-earning potential
Ideally, you should use an airline card to book flights with that airline and a transferable rewards card for other purchases. That will net you the most value for your rewards. The United Club's earning rate for United purchases far eclipses what the AAdvantage Executive and Delta Reserve earn for American Airlines and Delta purchases, respectively:
With the United Club, you'll earn 11 miles per dollar spent on United fare bookings (mileage rate may vary depending on your elite status and fare class).
With the AAdvantage Executive, you'll earn 4 miles per dollar spent on American Airlines purchases (5 miles per dollar spent after spending $150,000 in a calendar year).
With the Delta Reserve, you'll earn 3 miles per dollar spent on all Delta purchases.
UNITED AIRLINES
If you're a frequent American or Delta flyer, you may find more value in opening a card like the Amex Platinum, which earns more per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline (subject to a spending cap).
Statement credits and notable perks
All three cards offer day-of-travel perks, such as free checked bags and priority boarding, to make your flight a better overall experience. They also offer statement credits to help offset their high annual fees, similarly to the transferable rewards cards we compared earlier.
These perks focus on travel-related activities for the most part, such as renting cars, booking hotels and hiring a car via a ride-hailing service. Two notable exceptions are the United Club's up to $20 monthly Instacart credits and the Delta Reserve's up to $20 monthly statement credit for U.S. Resy purchases (enrollment required).
Interestingly, the AAdvantage Executive Mastercard is the only card of these three to restrict its ride-hailing credit to a specific service: Lyft. If you rely on ride-hailing statement credits to offset a meaningful part of your card's annual fee, this may nudge you toward the United Club or Delta Reserve.
Lounge access
As expected, these cards offer lounge access that focuses on their partner airlines' lounge networks. With the United Club and AAdvantage Executive, you'll receive unlimited access to United Clubs and American Airlines Admirals Clubs, respectively.

This differs from the Delta Reserve, which limits cardmembers to 15 Delta Sky Club visits each Medallion year, unless they spend $75,000 on their card in a calendar year. This likely won't matter much unless you're in the air all the time, but it's still a noteworthy limitation, given that these three cards charge similar annual fees.
However, the Delta Reserve makes up for this shortcoming to an extent by offering access to Centurion Lounges.
Premium hotel credit cards compared
Annual fee
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant is $100 more each year than the Hilton Honors Aspire Card. The flexibility of the Brilliant's benefits means the extra $100 should be easy to recoup, but it's important to carefully consider how often you'll be staying with Marriott before committing to that additional cost.
You may find that you need to stay with Hilton or Marriott at least a few times each year to fully appreciate the value of the Aspire or Brilliant perks.
Welcome offer
The Aspire's welcome offer is worth slightly more than the Bonvoy Brilliant's according to our valuations, at $800 against $750. Of course, the value you get from a welcome offer can vary depending on how you redeem it, so it may be possible to squeeze more value out of either card's offer.
Your upcoming travel plans will play the biggest role in determining which card's welcome offer you're drawn toward. Even though the Aspire's offer is more valuable, it won't matter much if you aren't planning to stay with the brand next year.
Rewards-earning potential
Similarly to how I recommend using your airline card for airline purchases, I recommend using your hotel card for hotel purchases and placing all other charges on a transferable rewards card.
MARRIOTT BONVOY
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant earns 6 points per dollar spent at Marriott, compared to the Hilton Honors Aspire's 14 points per dollar spent at Hilton. When you factor in the additional points you'll receive from these cards' complimentary hotel status, those earning rates go up to 21 and 34 points per dollar spent, respectively.
That makes the Hilton Aspire the stronger earner between the two, but either card is a worthwhile choice when you're staying with its partner brand.
Statement credits and notable perks
Both cards primarily focus their benefits on their own hotel brands, offering complimentary elite status and free-night certificates. If you're looking for a card with hotel-aligned statement credits, the Hilton Aspire is likely the better option. Its up to $400 in Hilton Resort statement credits each calendar year can offset a large chunk of the card's annual fee.
The Bonvoy Brilliant doesn't have a comparable benefit, but its up to $300 in dining statement credits each calendar year may prove more appealing for travelers looking for flexibility with their card benefits. The Hilton Aspire offers up to $200 in flight statement credits each calendar year, but this is limited to $50 per quarter, an amount that many cardmembers may find hard to maximize.
Lounge access
Rather uniquely for a hotel card, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant offers a Priority Pass Select membership. If you don't have lounge access through another card, this could swing you toward the Brilliant, even if you stay with Hilton a little more frequently.
JORDAN WALLER/THE POINTS GUY
The Hilton Aspire does not offer airport lounge access.
All these cards also provide various coverages and protections when you're traveling or making purchases, which can make your life easy if things go awry. They all have some combination of the following protections and insurance:
The Sapphire Reserve is the best premium credit card for travel protections, with its slew of protections like primary car rental insurance, emergency evacuation insurance and travel accident insurance.
Choosing a premium credit card isn't easy. They all come with high annual fees, so you need to carefully consider how much real value you expect to get out of one before applying.
Frequent travelers can benefit from having a premium transferable rewards card, airline card and hotel card, but less frequent travelers may find it more advantageous to choose just one or two premium cards. Some of us here at TPG have several premium credit cards, while others (like myself) currently don't have a top-tier airline or hotel card.
Ultimately, owning multiple (or even one) premium credit card isn't required to reap the perks of travel rewards, but it can take your trips to the next level.
For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the benefits may be provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.
