Amex Promotions on Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare
The cards we feature here are from partners who compensate us when you are approved through our site, and this may impact how or where these products appear. We don’t cover all available credit cards, but our analysis, reviews, and opinions are entirely from our editorial team. Terms apply to the offers listed on this page. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information.

Whether you think social media is amazing or stupid, the bottom line is that you can save a lot of money if you take advantage of the right promotions. Companies these days are clamoring to drive business by engaging consumers through these channels and I think American Express is the leading credit card company when it comes to social media.

Most recently they launched a Twitter promotion where you sync your Amex card to your various accounts, and when you either enter Tweets with particular hashtags in them or you check in at various locations, you get discounts at participating merchants.

It's simple to sync your credit card to your Twitter account on this page.

Though it doesn't seem to explicitly state it in the Terms and Conditions, it sounds like you can only link one card per social media account. On Twitter, when you use the corresponding hashtag for an offer, you should get an @ reply from Amex telling you that you've been enrolled and are eligible for the offer, and then when you send your hashtagged Tweet and make your eligible purchases, you will be issued a statement credit.

Some of the merchants participating in the Amex Twitter promotion.

As you can see in this screenshot of the Amex Twitter Favorites, some of the offers include:

-$10 back your next online purchase of $75 or more at Zappo's by 4/30
-$10 back on your next online purchase of $50 or more at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM until 4/30
-$5 back on your next in-store purchase of $5 or more at McDonald's until 3/31
-$10 back on an in-store purchase of $50 or more at H&M until 4/30
-A $20 credit with a single in-store purchase of $75 or more at Whole Foods until 4/30
-10% back on the purchase of a Main Cabin ticket on Virgin America until 3/31
-$5 back on $20 or more on in-store purchase at FedEx until 5/31

And several more. So if you're a diligent Tweeter and keep track of those hashtags, the savings and discounts could really add up. I'm signing up the TPG Twitter account today, so while you're syncing your Amex card to your Twitter, be sure to follow me too!

T&C

It's pretty simple, and the Amex Terms & Conditions page does a good job at summarizing how it works for each program:

  • Foursquare. Once you have completed the registration/syncing process, when you use your Foursquare account to "check in" to a location for which an Offer exists, an electronic message will be sent to your mobile device through your Foursquare account notifying you of an available Offer (such as, by way of example, a statement credit or point of sale discount) and you must activate certain Offers by pressing the "Load to Card" or similar button. To redeem an Offer, you must follow the instructions in the Offer Terms and use your Registered Card for the entire purchase described in the Offer at the location described in the Offer, unless otherwise indicated in the Offer Terms.
  • Facebook. Once you have completed the registration/syncing process, when you are logged into your Facebook account and you access the "Link, Like, Love" tab of the American Express page, you will be notified of available Offers (such as, by way of example, a statement credit or point of sale discount) and you must activate certain Offers by clicking the "Add to Card" or similar button. If you are logged into Facebook Places and an Offer is available near your current location, you will be presented with such available Offer through Facebook Places and must "check in" at that specified location and follow any additional instructions to claim/add the Offer. To redeem an Offer, you must follow the instructions in the Offer Terms that appear in the communication containing the Offer and use your Registered Card for the entire purchase described in the Offer at the location described in the Offer, unless otherwise indicated in the Offer Terms.
  • Twitter.Once you have completed the registration/syncing process, you may view available offers on the American Express "Favorites" tab on Twitter. Participating merchants may also Tweet available Offers to their followers through Twitter. You must activate certain Offers by posting a Tweet that includes the #hashtag provided for that Offer. American Express will send you an @reply message to confirm your enrollment in an Offer, or to notify you that an Offer is no longer available. To redeem an Offer, you must follow the instructions in the Offer Terms that appear in the communication containing the Offer and use your Registered Card for the entire purchase described in the Offer at the location described in the Offer, unless otherwise indicated in the Offer Terms.
