The best U. S. mountain towns for an amazing weekend getaway
When you don't have time for a weeklong vacation, a mountain town can deliver the perfect change of scenery in just a few days.
Across the U.S., these destinations offer everything from scenic gondola rides and pristine hiking trails to cozy cafés, craft breweries and luxury resorts. Plus, many of them offer enough walkable charm that you can leave your car parked for most of the weekend.
Whether you're chasing fall foliage, fresh powder, wildflower-filled meadows or cool summer temperatures, these mountain escapes are ideal for a long weekend. Better yet, many are surprisingly accessible from major airports, making them easy to fit into a Friday-through-Sunday itinerary.
From the towering Tetons to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Green Mountains of Vermont, these destinations make ideal long-weekend escapes any time of year.
Taos, New Mexico
The Sangre de Cristo Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for Taos, where Native American, Spanish and Western cultures come together in one of the Southwest's most distinctive destinations.
One of the things I love about this destination is that you don't need to be particularly athletic to enjoy a weekend here. It's easy to spend your days exploring the UNESCO-listed Taos Pueblo, strolling the galleries surrounding Taos Plaza or driving the spectacular Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway.
However, outdoor adrenaline enthusiasts won't be disappointed. Hike Wheeler Peak, the highest mountain in New Mexico, raft the Rio Grande Gorge or ride the scenic lift at Taos Ski Valley during summer to go mountain biking, or just enjoy the views. Winter transforms the area into one of North America's most respected ski destinations, known for challenging terrain and relatively uncrowded slopes.
At night, seek out some of New Mexico's famed red and green chiles at Taos' popular dining spots. Then finish the evening beneath some of the country's darkest skies, perfect for stargazing.

Breckenridge, Colorado
If you're looking for a quick break from Denver or Boulder, Breckenridge makes an easy weekend getaway with a classic Colorado mountain-town atmosphere. Its beautifully preserved Victorian Main Street is lined with cafés, boutiques, breweries and historic buildings dating back to the mining era.
I love visiting during the summer months, when you can hike alpine trails, paddle on nearby Dillon Reservoir or ride the BreckConnect Gondola for panoramic mountain views and fun mountain activities, including live music sunset concerts. Winter brings world-renowned skiing and snowboarding across five peaks. And fall in Breckenridge brings the spectacular colors of the changing Aspen trees.
You can enjoy après-ski even when there's no snow at one of the town's lively restaurants or with a range of craft spirits at Breckenridge Distillery (the highest distillery in North America at 9,600 feet). Oh, and don't miss Hearthstone, the troll that lives in the woods (don't worry, it's really a 15-foot statue made out of recycled wood).
Where to stay: Hyatt Vacation Club at The Ranahan offers classic mountain house vibes with wood-accented interiors, vaulted ceilings and blazing fireplaces. The residential-style accommodations indoor/outdoor pool and firepits for s'mores make it a great fit for families.
New Paltz, New York
The first time I visited New Paltz, I couldn't believe I was just 90 minutes from New York City. The entire town feels like you've jetted off to a refreshing western mountain escape, but you can easily take a weekend trip from Manhattan without an expensive flight.
Located in the Hudson Valley beneath the Shawangunk Ridge, known locally as "the Gunks," New Paltz is a favorite of hikers and climbers. You can spend the day exploring Minnewaska State Park Preserve or Mohonk Preserve before browsing the town's many bookstores, cafés and cute local boutiques. History buffs should visit Huguenot Street, one of America's oldest continuously inhabited streets.
Autumn is one of my favorite times to visit, when the vibrant foliage transforms the surrounding mountains with a spectacular display of colors, but visiting in the summer means being able to literally jump in a lake for a swim; the spring brings wildflowers galore, and in winter, snowshoeing and skiing in the Gunks.
Where to stay: Mohonk Mountain House is one of America's iconic historic resorts and one of our favorite summer getaways for families. It offers an unforgettable all-inclusive mountain experience in the middle of 40,000 acres of gorgeous mountain scenery.
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Bordering Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg serves as one of the country's most popular mountain gateways. More than 800 miles of hiking trails begin just minutes from downtown.
When you're done with your hiking explorations, ditch the car and take the trolley to see the town, then take the SkyLift up to Crockett Mountain. If that's not high enough for you, try walking across the Gatlinburg SkyBridge after you get to the top, the longest suspension bridge in North America. Personally, I'm newly obsessed with Anakeesta, a mountainside adventure park you reach by glass-enclosed gondola, that has a new nighttime firefly experience that recreates the firefly migration in the Smokies.
(And just 15 minutes away is Pigeon Forge and Dollywood, which is always a good time).
In the winter, locals visit Gatlinburg to ski and snowboard at Tennessee's only ski resort, Ober Gatlinburg.
Where to stay: Rocky Waters Inn offers a luxe stay along the Little Pigeon River, just off the Gatlinburg Parkway. Every room has river views, making it a perfect spot for soaking in the mountain scenery,

Asheville, North Carolina
One of TPG's top picks for travel in 2026, Asheville is reinvigorated after surviving a round of devastating storms in the fall of 2024. The town, which blends Blue Ridge Mountain scenery with one of the South's most vibrant food and craft beer scenes, is once again an ideal spot for a weekend of mountain charms.
No visit is complete without touring the magnificent Biltmore Estate, America's largest privately owned home, where you can also sip wine at the on-site winery and dine on delicious bites at multiple eateries (the Appalachian comfort food Stable Cafe is always a good choice). The River Arts District is where to visit local artists and tour galleries (you can even try your hand at art classes ranging from oil painting to glass blowing).
Make sure you leave time to drive even a small section of the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway for some of the most beautiful scenery in America.

Sun Valley, Idaho
Long before ski resorts became fashionable, Sun Valley was attracting everyone from celebrities (hello, Robert Redford) to celebrated Olympians to its beautiful mountain slopes. Today, the Idaho resort remains one of America's premier mountain escapes while also maintaining a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere.
While you may picture the frosted winter wonderland of deep drifts of snow and exceptional skiing across Bald Mountain's terrain, summer visitors have plenty to do, too. You can bike more than 400 miles of trails, fly-fish the legendary Big Wood River, hike Bald Mountain, or attend concerts at the Sun Valley Pavilion.
Downtown Ketchum, adjacent to Sun Valley, is packed with independent restaurants, art galleries and outdoor outfitters. Literary fans take note: Ernest Hemingway spent his final years here, and his legacy remains woven into the community.
Where to stay: The Limelight Hotel Ketchum combines modern mountain style with walkable access to restaurants and shops, and it has the best views of Sun Valley around.
Park City, Utah
Just 35 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport, Park City may be the easiest major ski town in America to reach, making it ideal for a spontaneous weekend escape.
Historic Main Street blends Old West architecture with upscale shopping, excellent restaurants and numerous art galleries. Outdoor activities extend well beyond ski season, with mountain biking, scenic chairlift rides, fly fishing and hiking through meadows that fill with wildflowers in the spring and summer.
Although Park City is no longer the home of the Sundance Film Festival, the town still offers year-round cultural attractions alongside its outdoor adventures. The Sundance Mountain Resort is a great spot to try your hand at a variety of artistic endeavors and maybe find your new favorite hobby (think, pottery making, jewelry crafting, perfume mixing, glassblowing). For six weeks in summer, the Bluebird Cafe Concert Series turns the mountain into a music stage and year-round there are indoor concerts, author readings and film screenings.
Where to stay: The Grand Hyatt Deer Valley not only is a perfect base for ski vacations, but it also boasts one of the area's most impressive pools with vistas of the mountains you can enjoy from the water.
Jackson, Wyoming
Nestled beneath the jagged Teton Range, Jackson is the gateway to both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park and the town delivers one of America's most spectacular combinations of mountain scenery and wildlife.
Spend your weekend spotting bison, elk and moose, riding the aerial tram at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort or exploring the galleries and restaurants around Town Square, famous for its iconic elk-antler arches.
Summer offers hiking, rafting and wildlife safaris, while winter brings legendary powder skiing and snowshoeing through snow-covered forests.
Where to stay: The rustic-chic Cloudveil, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, puts you in walking distance of Jackson's restaurants and shops and offers a pool and excellent dining at The Bistro. It's dog-friendly, too, so you can bring your pup along for an adventure.
Warren, Vermont
Best known as the home to Sugarbush Resort, Warren embodies classic New England mountain charm in the heart of the Mad River Valley. If you have a picture of a bucolic Vermont town in your head, this might be what you're picturing: Covered bridges, rolling farmland and forested peaks capped with snow, all surrounding a small Vermont village, creating a postcard-perfect setting.
Summer visitors enjoy hiking sections of the Long Trail, mountain biking and swimming in local rivers, while fall brings spectacular foliage. Winter transforms Warren into a premier ski destination with terrain suited to every ability level.
After a day exploring outdoors, indulge in all the local treats here, including Vermont cheeses, maple syrup-doused pancakes and locally brewed craft beer.
Where to stay: What are you looking for in a New England getaway? Whitewashed exteriors, big porches, roaring fireplaces, exposed beams, beadboard and cozy rugs? Yup, The Pitcher Inn has all that, plus a general store, outstanding restaurant and a wellness center (note though, that it's "adult preferred").
Littleton, New Hampshire
Tucked along the Ammonoosuc River near the White Mountains, Littleton's relaxed pace makes it an ideal destination if you're looking for a quieter alternative to larger mountain destinations (and it's just over two hours from Boston, making it an easy city break). The town also offers easy access to some of New England's most popular outdoor recreation.
Hike in Franconia Notch State Park, drive the scenic Kancamagus Highway or explore nearby covered bridges and waterfalls. Fall foliage season is especially spectacular, but the White Mountains offer year-round appeal.
Stop for a photo op at the postcard-perfect Riverwalk Covered Bridge before taking a stroll through Littleton's charming downtown. Here you'll find an array of locally owned shops, antique store, cafes and, best of all, one of the country's oldest candy stores, Chutters, filled with jars of every penny candy imaginable.
Where to stay: While there are several small inns and motels in Littleton to choose from, there is a new, unique option if you're visiting in the summer: Under Canvas White Mountains for luxury glamping, s'mores and excellent stargazing. It's about 13 miles from town and is part of Hyatt.
Mammoth Lakes, California
Surrounded by the Sierra Nevada, Mammoth Lakes boasts the state's highest ski peak and highest base elevation and offers up one of the West's most impressive collections of outdoor adventures.
The combination of dramatic volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear lakes and towering granite peaks makes Mammoth Lakes one of California's most scenic mountain escapes, and it's equally popular with skiers, hikers, mountain bikers and anglers.
Visit in the summer, and you'll be able to check out the new alpine coaster, one of several non-ski activities at Woolly's Adventure Summit, including a zip line, ropes course and mountain tubing anytime of year.
Spend your weekend exploring Devils Postpile National Monument, kayaking on alpine lakes, soaking in natural hot springs or hiking to Rainbow Falls. Tioga Pass, when open, also provides access to the eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park.
Where to stay: The Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth, features an outdoor pool, a children's center and a village area with shopping and dining that connects via gondola to the slopes.
