Stop by La Factoria in Old San Juan
Begin your Puerto Rico adventure in San Juan — specifically the historic part of the capital city, Old San Juan. While history buffs will love El Morro and San Cristóbal, two remarkable forts built by the Spaniards in the 16th century, Old San Juan isn’t just about the island’s heritage. It’s also where you'll find modern, exciting places to indulge.
One such place is La Factoria, a nightlife hot spot that’s been named one of the 50 best bars in the world for five consecutive years. Established in 2013, La Factoria elevated Puerto Rico’s mixology scene to global acclaim. It’s technically six bars in one, allowing you to choose the ambience you want. From ice-cold beer and craft cocktails to small bites and multiple dance floors, you’ll be sure to find a spot (or a half-dozen) to kick back and relax with your travel companions.
Discover local art at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico
Housed largely in a former municipal hospital building in the Santurce area of San Juan, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico has been a cultural beacon for nearly three decades. In 2019, the museum introduced the permanent exhibit "Puerto Rico Plural," showcasing over 250 works of art by Puerto Ricans from the 18th century to the present day.
There are 24 exhibition rooms featuring over 1,000 different pieces, including sculptures, paintings and photography. The museum also has a 400-seat theater and a sprawling 2.5-acre botanical garden on-site.
Immerse yourself in the captivating artistic expressions of Puerto Rico amid a backdrop that seamlessly blends the historical with the contemporary, offering a unique window into the island's cultural richness.
And this is just the beginning of Santurce's artistic offerings.

Marvel at the impressive street art
After your museum excursion, don’t rush back to your hotel. Take some time to explore the vibrant Santurce neighborhood. The area is being reimagined by talented artists bringing it back to life. It now features one of the largest street art districts in the Caribbean. Not to mention, it's also home to the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Puerto Rico and the Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré.
Take a guided walking tour of Santurce, or time your visit to coincide with Santurce es Ley, an annual street art festival with live demonstrations, musical performances and culinary delights. Delve into the diverse array of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, ranging from street food to upscale dining options.
Learn the rhythms, and dance bomba
Bomba, a traditional Puerto Rican dance rooted in African culture, has been integral to the island’s heritage for centuries. When dancing bomba, the dancer sets the rhythm, not the musicians, leading to expressions that can be somber, passionate or joyful — it’s whatever the dancer chooses to express at that moment.
Experience the artistry of bomba firsthand by taking dance lessons or drumming workshops at institutions like the Don Rafael Cepeda School of Bomba and Plena. Alternatively, immerse yourself in the pulsating rhythms of bomba performances at local venues such as La Terraza de Bonanza in Santurce or La Verguenza in Old San Juan.
Bottom line
Puerto Rico beckons with its diverse array of attractions, appealing to a wide spectrum of travelers. Beyond its idyllic beaches and tropical allure, the island pulsates with cultural vibrancy, inviting you to explore the amazing art, dance and music of its residents. And with unparalleled convenience, Puerto Rico is just a domestic flight away from the U.S. mainland.
