The major U.S. airlines have said that they will be proactively reaching out to affected customers — long-haul international flights are not expected to be affected, but smaller regional flights will be. United Airlines specifically said it will not affect its hub-to-hub direct flights.
Nevertheless, it’s essential to check your flight status using the airline’s app or a third-party app, such as FlightAware. Be sure your contact information is up to date and opt in for text or email notifications from your airline.
What if your flight gets canceled?
This is where points and miles can be extremely helpful. Have a plan B — book a backup flight if possible, and check the airline’s policy; many U.S. carriers are adjusting their policies to allow passengers to reschedule travel ahead of time without penalty. If your flight is canceled and you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a refund under U.S. Department of Transportation rules.
To expedite security once in the airport
If you remember one thing this week, it should be this tip: Opt in for Touchless ID.
Membership qualifications vary for each service. If you are not a U.S. citizen, there are different eligibility requirements for Clear Plus and TSA PreCheck, with Clear Plus offering the service to residents of 42 countries.
No. 2: Clear Concierge service
Clear Concierge offers two additional services over and above being a Clear Plus member — Express and Gate service. Gate service is perfect for families and is $179 for up to nine travelers. You’ll be met upon arrival and escorted through bag check, security and to your gate.
If you get Global Entry, it includes a TSA PreCheck membership for five years. Once you apply for Global Entry online, first-time applicants are required to attend an in-person interview to finalize their application. I have used Appointment Scanner to find last-minute appointment cancellations. U.S. citizenship isn’t required, but everyone in the family must have Global Entry to use the kiosks upon arrival. You can also download the free Global Entry mobile app to upload your information, streamline your arrival and skip the kiosk.
Bottom line
A little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a relaxing trip, and you can rest easy knowing you have tools at the ready to help you navigate even the most challenging travel situations.
Thank you to all the FAA and TSA employees who continue to work during the government shutdown — we appreciate your service.
Have a great weekend,
BK
