If there’s one thing I do almost every day, it’s dine out or order in, so maximizing my points earnings from dining and groceries is huge. Especially since becoming a dad — my grocery bill has gone up dramatically, so the American Express® Gold Card is a no-brainer. Even if you already have The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Gold card is a must-have, especially when you consider the perks.
The card offers various annual statement credits (which almost completely offset the card’s annual fee) — including up to $120 in Uber Cash and up to $120 in dining statement credits with eligible dining partners. These work out to $10 per month each (enrollment is required).
You’ll earn 4 points per dollar on spending at U.S. supermarkets* and restaurants, which is a great way to ramp up your earnings and is perfect during the holiday season for dining out or entertaining at home.
I load my Amex Gold card into all my delivery apps: Caviar, Seamless and Uber Eats — those points really add up quickly, especially when you consider you’re earning 4 points per dollar spent. Then, to make those points even more valuable, I watch for transfer bonuses that Amex runs with travel partners so I can turn my points into miles and book airfare.
The current welcome bonus on the Amex Gold card is 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases with your new card within the first six months of card membership. That welcome bonus is worth $1,200, according to our latest valuations.
But, you could be targeted for an even higher offer of 90,000 points on this card through CardMatch (offer subject to change at any time), so be sure to check there first.
* U.S. supermarket purchases earn 4 points per dollar on up to $25,000 per calendar year in purchases, then 1 point per dollar.
