| 2 things I love: Cape Cod and a travel deal |

We are currently experiencing what is likely the hottest summer on Earth, and the headlines are pretty alarming, with “Europe in a heat cauldron” and “101-degree waters off the coast of Florida,” which means you’re basically swimming in a hot tub.
I think the new vacation luxury might be finding temperate locations, especially in these summer months. I’ve personally found mine — I spent this past week in Provincetown, Massachusetts, which is at the top of Cape Cod — and boy, have I really fallen in love with this town. I’ve been here six or seven times over the last 15 years, and it’s always really charming.
It has a large Portuguese community with historical roots as a fishing village, but is now a quaint town that’s very LGBTQI+-friendly and has great restaurants. As a Long Island boy, I’m partial to those beaches, but we did find good beaches within biking distance during our stay. We enjoyed the nightlife as well — we found amazing drag performers and shows every night of the week.
To get here, you can fly Cape Air (which you can book with Delta SkyMiles), take a ferry from Boston Harbor or drive.
Here are a few recommendations if you are planning a trip to Provincetown:
Lodging
There are no points hotels or chains in this area of Cape Cod, but there are plenty of cute bed-and-breakfasts and houses for rent. I booked a house through Vrbo, which I loved! It was in a fabulous location in the heart of town and within walking distance of everything. I booked through the United MileagePlus Shopping portal to earn 3 United miles per dollar, plus 3 points per dollar for using my Chase Sapphire Reserve card. I also earned another 2% back in Expedia OneKeyCash.
Activities
I highly recommend getting out on the water — we took a sunset cruise with Hindu Sailing Charters on the Cutter Bloodhound. Bonus: The sailings are dog friendly.
We had a beach picnic planned by the fabulous BeachBabes Butler. They are an LGBTQI+-owned business, and Jodie and Tori can handle everything from beach happy hours to picnics and proposals. They set everything up so you can just enjoy the beach.
Restaurants
I love these restaurants while vacationing in the area: Red Inn for dinner, Jimmy’s HideAway and Ciro and Sal’s. And of course, it wouldn’t be a Cape Cod vacation without a lobster roll from Lobster Pot Express.
Overall, Provincetown is just a very happy and welcoming town, and I’m already thinking about my return trip next summer. I just can’t recommend it enough!
Southwest Companion Pass offer
There was a great offer this week that you should be paying attention to. I’m not personally a regular Southwest Airlines flyer due to my home airport, but the Southwest Companion Pass is one of the best deals out there.
With it, you can essentially travel with a designated travel companion for free on all your Southwest flights (excluding taxes and fees) for the year you earn it … and the entire following calendar year.
Right now, there’s a shortcut to qualifying by using the current best-ever sign-up bonus on the Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card.
If you apply for this card and spend $15,000 on it by the end of the year, you will earn at least 135,000 points, which, combined with the 10,000-bonus-points boost for cardholders, is the exact number of points needed to earn the Companion Pass for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024.
If you’re not already a Rapid Rewards member, you’ll have to join that program to get the points deposited and use the pass. Some of the additional card perks include two annual EarlyBird check-ins, 25% back on inflight purchases and the ability to make progress toward elite status with Southwest based on your card spending. Also, Southwest is very flexible with redepositing points and changing award tickets, making travel planning less stressful than with some other programs.
