If you’re reading this in the U.S., there’s a good chance you’re reading from the road. Or maybe you’re about to head to the airport for what’s expected to be some of the busiest days ever for air travel. Regardless, happy Independence Day wherever you’re celebrating.
But, despite the holiday, there’s been no slowdown in aviation news. Airlines have been busy with their usual route updates — and a blockbuster new lounge.
The latter came from Delta Air Lines, which opened the first of its hotly anticipated new Delta One business-class lounges. TPG’s Zach Griff got a first look — and he expects it to be a crowd-pleaser.
In route news, budget carrier Avelo Airlines made the biggest splash this week, saying it would drop six cities from its route map as it extends its schedule into January.
American is rebuilding its presence at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) with new routes. Elsewhere, Delta is adding several short-haul routes — as well as a new overseas route from a Florida city that’s not one of its hubs.
Alaska Airlines is on the move too, adding new service to New Orleans and to Mexico — including one route on which Alaska will offer the only nonstop service to the U.S.
What’s next for JetBlue’s de facto business-class product? JetBlue President Marty St. George, in one of his first interviews since returning to the New York-based carrier earlier this year, talked to TPG’s Sean Cudahy about what the airline is planning for Mint as it enters its second decade of flying.
Until next time …
