Those are among the most interesting developments during what’s turned out to be a busy two weeks for route planners at U.S. airlines.
But it was JetBlue’s cuts that hit the hardest.
The carrier’s move to slash eight routesfrom Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) dramatically reduces its presence there. With that, JetBlue finally be throwing in the towel on its two-decade effort to develop a West Coast hub or focus city as it refocuses its network where it’s strongest – along the East Coast.
Aside from the LAX cuts, JetBlue also said it’s dropping four cities altogether as it tightens its route map.
Elsewhere, budget carrier Frontier has New York on its mind. It announced plans to return to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and add its first-ever service from the city’s John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK).
The nation’s two newest low-cost carriers were each in expansion mode, too. Breeze is adding five new cities to its route map while Avelo is adding one of its longest routes yet amid three more routes from its main East Coast base.
I’ll leave it there for this week. Until next time …
