Exciting new routes

by Ben Mutzabaugh, Managing Editor for Aviation

Hello TPG readers!

Athens. Alaska. Toronto. Vienna. Tokyo. Paris.

Those are all among cities landing new U.S. routes in what’s turned out to be a busy two weeks for airline network planners.

Perhaps the busiest among the bunch was Frontier Airlines. It announced a whopping 54 new routes across 38 different airports, beefing up at major hubs like Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport that could suggest a shift in strategy at the ultra-low-cost carrier.

Sun Country Airlines took notice of Frontier’s expansion, risking a turf war by quickly adding an overlapping new route of its own.

United Airlines has also been busy, announcing a new transatlantic route from Chicago to Greece as well as adding a bevy of new and returning routes to Alaska and Canada. Among those: nonstop service from Washington, D.C., to Alaska’s largest city.

Alaska Airlines also has Canada in its sights, announcing a new transcontinental route to Toronto — though it’s also dropping a tech-focused California route from Austin. Another notable cut came from JetBlue, which will drop Baltimore from its route map altogether.

Phoenix landed a coveted new route to Europe thanks to Air France, while Scandinavian Airlines appears to be getting a jump on its switch to the SkyTeam alliance with a new route to Delta Air Lines’ megahub in Atlanta. Boston gets in the transatlantic mix, too, with new service on Austrian Airlines.

There’ll be more routes across the Pacific, too. The latest comes from American Airlines, which revealed last week that it had won government approval to launch new service connecting New York to Japan.

Closing out the action was startup airline Breeze Airways, which unveiled three new summertime routes from its fast-growing base at Raleigh-Durham.

That’s all for now. Until next time …
