Where to next?

Hello TPG readers!

It’s the first day of summer, which means the busy vacation season officially kicks into high gear.

But the route planners at your favorite airline are already thinking far beyond this summer. They’re trying to figure out where you’ll want to go this winter — or even next summer — as they craft future flight schedules that now go well into 2024.

We’ve seen several new announcements just during the past two weeks. Here’s a look at some of the most interesting.

Alaska Airlines

The Seattle-based carrier added three new routes, including two transcontinental ones. The airline’s nonstop between New York and Palm Springs, California, will give travelers a welcome non-red-eye option on the 2,378-mile route. But it’s Alaska’s new service from Miami to Portland, Oregon, that’s getting most of the attention — and sparking talk of a possible “turf war” (more on that below).

American Airlines

American has added a slew of new services, including two new routes to Cancun amid what the carrier says will be its most-robust schedule ever to the Caribbean and Latin America this winter. There are also new routes from American’s hubs at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

But it’s American’s new route between Miami and Portland, Oregon, that’s sparked the talk of a potential turf war with Alaska. American and Alaska are Oneworld alliance partners, but American’s new route — announced just days after Alaska’s service — has reminded us just how competitive the airline industry is.

Delta Air Lines

Delta shocked the industry back in 2019 when it announced plans to buy a stake in South American giant LATAM Airlines — a move that ended a decadeslong alliance between LATAM and Oneworld partner American. Delta and LATAM promised cooperation and new routes to come, though those plans were slowed by the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Now, the airlines are resuming their push — and the latest move comes with new and expanded Delta routes to Colombia and Peru.

Hawaii gets a boost …

Both Delta and Alaska announced new service to Hawaii, each rolling out an interesting new route to the state.

Alaska’s is especially unusual: The carrier is adding nonstop service to Honolulu from Paine Field (PAE) in Everett, Washington, which sits about 30 miles north of downtown Seattle and serves as a secondary airport for the metro area. The flights will be the only service between Hawaii and Paine Field, which had gone decades with no commercial service at all until 2019.

Delta’s new Hawaii service will come from its hub at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), which will get seasonal service this winter to Kahului Airport (OGG) on the island of Maui. The 3,917-mile route will be Delta’s second to Hawaii from MSP.

… and so does Singapore

Singapore is one of the most far-flung destinations for travelers from North America. Despite that, the bustling metropolis in South Asia is well connected to the United States. Singapore Airlines operates several routes to the United States — including the world’s two longest flights — as does United Airlines.

Now, Air Canada will give travelers yet another choice in April when it begins Boeing 787 Dreamliner service from Vancouver, British Columbia. All three of those airlines are members of the Star Alliance, giving that frequent flyer group a dominant presence in the market.

That’s all for this week. Until next time …
