United has launched a new round of Mile Play promotions, which awards bonus miles to targeted members after flying a set number of flights. Now’s a good time to check to see if you are eligible and then register — even if you aren’t sure of your upcoming travel plans quite yet.

Several TPG staff members have received targeted offers for trips booked and flown from now through Sept. 30, 2022. To see if you’re eligible and register, click here and enter your MileagePlus number.

As is normal with these promotions, the offers range widely from one member to another. Additionally, not everyone is targeted for a bonus. We checked around the TPG team and found the following offers:

I'm currently a Premier 1K elite and received an offer for 5,000 miles after taking three trips. The minimum fare is $50, giving me a solid return. Based on TPG’s current valuations, 5,000 MileagePlus miles are worth about $60.

Senior aviation writer Ethan Klapper, who is also a Premier 1K, received the same offer; however, Ethan's offer requires a $250 minimum on each flight.

Other Premier 1K offers that we've seen include two trips for 4,000 miles ($50 minimum on each fare) and four trips for 13,000 miles ($275 minimum on each fare).

Senior writer Katie Genter, a United Premier Silver member, received an offer for 4,000 bonus miles after taking two trips. The fare must be a minimum of $50 to qualify.

Another Premier Silver member, TPG's executive editor, Scott Mayerowitz, was offered 5,000 bonus miles after taking one trip that cost at least $675.

One Premier Silver member received a wild-card offer: two trips in a premium cabin (the terms specify United First, United Business or United Polaris business class or in United Premium Plus in the O, A, R, C, D, J, P and Z fare classes) with a minimum fare of $650 to earn 22,000 bonus miles. That's worth over $250 at our valuations.

Editor Andrew Kunesh, a Premier Gold elite, received an offer for 2,500 bonus miles after taking just one trip that cost at least $100. Based on TPG valuations, this bonus is worth just over $30.

Even if you don't have United status, however, you might still be targeted for a Mile Play offer. For example, TPG's managing editor Clint Henderson — a general MileagePlus member — received an offer of 3,900 bonus miles after taking one trip with a fare of at least $175.

Andrea Rotondo, TPG's director of content, received an offer of 2,500 miles after taking just one trip with a $50 minimum.

Not everyone is targeted for an offer, though. Even some of our higher-tier United elites didn’t get a new MilePlay offer.

Other ways to earn United miles

Whether you were targeted for this promotion or not, you can earn a ton of bonus United miles by opening a new United cobranded credit card. Currently, there are several sweet offers:

  • United Explorer Card: Earn up to 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open. The first-year annual fee is waived and it’s $95 per year thereafter.
  • United Business Card: Earn up to 150,000 bonus miles. Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open. Plus, earn an additional 75,000 miles after you spend $20,000 total on purchases in the first six months your account is open.
  • United Quest Card: Earn 70,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.
  • United Club Infinite Card: Earn 80,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 in the first three months from account opening. The annual fee on this card is $525, but that’s largely offset by the United Club membership that comes with this card.

Additionally, Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer instantly to United MileagePlus.

Cards that earn bonus miles on United flights

While these United cobranded cards can help you stock up on United miles, you’ll earn even more miles when you book these flights with one of the best cards for airfare purchases, like The Platinum Card® from American Express (5 points per dollar on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year) or the Citi Premier® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express® Gold Card, which each earn 3 points per dollar on airfare when booked directly with airlines or on Amex Travel on the Amex Gold.
