Dress like your Condor airplane and reap a reward

When German leisure airline Condor began flying its new Airbus A330neos bearing the carrier's colorful striped livery, a pilot tried to convince a traveler (me) that a few days before each flight, passengers could vote on what color stripes would be on their aircraft.

Condor started rolling out its striped livery in April 2022, citing the colors and accoutrements of summer — from beach towels and ice cream parlors to parasols — as inspiration.

The carrier chose five distinct colors and names for the livery stripes: sunshine (yellow), passion (red), sea (blue), island (green) and beach (beige). In September 2024, Condor added a pink stripe for breast cancer awareness.

The stripe colors you get are not assigned by a vote, despite the pilot's joke.

Passengers on long-haul flights may board an aircraft with blue, green or beige stripes, while short- and medium-haul passengers may board planes with red, yellow or pink stripes.

Now, Condor has completed the repainting of its entire fleet of Airbus A320-200, Airbus A321-200, Airbus A300neo and Boeing 757-300 aircraft with the new striped livery. And, to celebrate the third anniversary of the livery's introduction, Condor is hosting a "Match the Stripes" contest.

From now through the end of April 2025, Condor passengers who wear a striped shirt or dress that matches the exterior stripes on their aircraft will get a 10-euro voucher (worth about $10.78).

You can cash in the voucher for food or drink items, such as Brewdog beer in a striped can or a Condorpolitan cocktail (featuring vodka, sweet lychee, lime zest and cranberry) packaged in a striped tube, from the Skyline Cafe. Otherwise, you can use it for merchandise from the Condor Bordshop, which sells a variety of Condor airplane models sporting the striped livery and a selection of socks adorned with blue or red airplanes. You must use the voucher on board during your flight.

Voucher winners will also receive a code to use with the My Postcard website or app so they can create a photo postcard of their matchy-matchy look. We suggest posing not only with the plane but with some of the stripey amenities you see or gather inside the plane (such as the striped headrests, paper cups, air sickness bags, cocktail napkins or sugar packets).

There are rules and regulations to Condor's Match the Stripes contest, of course, and you can read up on them on the website.

But the bottom line is that in order to get the inflight contest voucher from Condor this month, you will need to wear a shirt or dress with colored stripes going lengthwise or crosswise with alternating white stripes. The colored stripes on your outfit must be an approximate match to the Condor colors on the plane you are boarding (i.e., sea/blue, passion/red, island/green, beach/beige, sunshine/yellow or bright pink) and be easily recognizable.

The crew on board will serve as judges and decide if you have matched the colored stripes correctly. This is another reason to always be kind to your crew.

But how will you know what color stripes to wear?

Easy — Condor will tell you.

Two days before your Condor flight, you can search online here to find out which aircraft has been assigned to your flight.

Once you know what aircraft you'll be flying on, you'll be able to see what colored livery stripes are on the exterior of the plane (here).

And once you know what color stripes will be on your airplane, you can head to your closet or dresser drawers, the nearest online or brick-and-mortar clothing shop, or even your sewing machine and pick out a striped, color-coordinated shirt or dress to wear on the plane.
