Some American Express cardholders are seeing offers for bonus points after spending (sometimes quite heavily) on their credit cards. These are targeted offers, so not everyone will see the same offers on their card — if they see any offers at all.

Let's take a look at the current spending offers available from Amex, what they're worth and how to use them.

Current spending offers from American Express

Current offers we have seen at TPG include the following, offering bonus Membership Rewards points:

  • Spend $5,500 or more, get 1,500 bonus points.
  • Spend $9,500 or more, get 2,500 bonus points.
  • Spend $11,000 or more, get 3,000 bonus points.
  • Spend $16,000 or more, get 4,000 bonus points.
  • Spend $30,500 or more, get 8,000 bonus points.
  • Spend $39,000 or more, get 10,000 bonus points.
  • Spend $192,500 or more, get 19,500 bonus points.

These offers amount to roughly a 0.5% return on spending, according to TPG's valuations of Membership Reward points.

However, there are better offers available. Targeted cardmembers can earn a 2% return on spending with these offers:

  • Spend $3,500 or more, get 3,500 bonus points.
  • Spend $4,000 or more, get 4,000 bonus points.
  • Spend $4,500 or more, get 4,500 bonus points.

The best offer we've seen offers a 2.9% return on spending:

  • Spend $4,500 or more, get 6,500 bonus points.

Some cardmembers are seeing a deadline of Nov 13, 2022; others are seeing deadlines of Dec. 31, 2022. Whichever deadline you have, you will need to add the offer to your card and complete the required spending by that point to earn the associated bonus points.

Each of these spending offers can be used up to three times. Thus, if you have the offer for "Spend $4,500 or more, get 6,500 bonus points," you could earn a total of 19,500 Membership Rewards points by spending $13,500 on your eligible card.

How to use Amex spending offers

To find these offers, check your Amex Offers across all of your Amex cards when logged into your account. As these are targeted offers, not everyone will have the same offers. You may have different offers on different cards — or might not have any of these offers at all.

You need to add the offer to your card before spending and then must use that same card for purchases in order to earn the associated bonus points.

Bottom line

Many of these offers provide a low return on spending. These shouldn't change your spending habits, based on the best bonus categories on the cards in your wallet. However, if you have upcoming purchases that could turn into bonus points, it's worth adding the offers to your eligible card.

Just be sure to do the math to see whether these offers trump other points or cash back you could earn by using a different credit card for your purchases.

How we chose these cards

Our points-obsessed staff uses a plethora of credit cards on a daily basis. If anyone on our team wouldn’t recommend it to a friend or a family member, we wouldn’t recommend it on The Points Guy either.
