Austrian Airlines to launch nonstop Vienna service from Boston
New England travelers are getting another direct connection to Europe.
Starting this summer, Austrian Airlines will launch nonstop service from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Vienna Airport (VIE) in Austria.
With five to six weekly round trips, the new route will mark the airport's first nonstop connection to the Austrian capital city, according to the carrier's parent company, Lufthansa Group.
The new service launches July 1, giving travelers myriad options for summer travel. They can choose to experience Vienna itself and stay in one of its best hotels, or they can connect onward to another European city via Austrian or one of its Star Alliance partners.
Expanding presence in Boston and the US

In a statement, company executives noted that the arrival of Austrian Airlines in Boston will mean Logan — a major hub for transatlantic travel — will be served by three major Lufthansa Group carriers, including Lufthansa and Swiss.
Meanwhile, come July, Austrian Airlines will serve at least six U.S. airports from Vienna, according to data from aviation analytics company Cirium. Existing airports shown on its route map below include Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Virginia's Dulles International Airport (IAD), and both Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in the New York City area.

Service details
Austrian plans to operate the Boston-to-Vienna service with its Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. With a 211-seat capacity, the three-cabin aircraft features 24 business-class pods, 30 premium economy seats and 157 seats in coach.
The airline specifically touts its "Flying Chef" program in business class. It includes meals prepared by onboard chefs, not to mention onboard sommeliers to recommend wine pairings.
Here's what the schedule looks like:
- BOS-VIE: Depart at 5:10 p.m., arrive at 7:25 a.m. the next day
- VIE-BOS: Depart at 10:40 a.m., arrive at 1:40 p.m.
From the outset, the airline will offer flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well as every other Tuesday.
Bottom line
Already with 50-plus international destinations, Boston flyers will be able to reach yet another European city without stopping. With the service launching in July, the new route could be an option for travelers planning a trip to Europe for the second half of this summer.
