As is the case with ultra-low-cost carriers, expect to pay a significant amount to check luggage, in addition to checking a seat. Although all Spirit fares allow one personal item (around 18x14x8 inches), you can pay $35 to bring on a larger carry-on item for the overhead bin or $42.00 to check your first bag during the booking process. Should you want to add on baggage later, you can do so for a higher price.
Maximize your purchase
Be sure to use a card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, including The Platinum Card® from American Express for airfare booked directly with the airline, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year, or the Citi Prestige® Card, both for 5 points per dollar on airfare. Or try the Citi Premier® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve, (both 3 points per dollar on airfare) or the American Express® Gold Card (3 points per dollar on airfare when booked directly with the airline). Lastly, consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (2 points per dollar on travel). Check out this post for more on maximizing airfare purchases.
The information for the Citi Prestige Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
Bottom line
Considering regularly priced Spirit flights are currently available starting at just $39 one way, this is an opportunity to stack two one-way fares for a cheaper round-trip flight than you would find on other carriers.
Be sure to use the promo code to book your travel by next Tuesday, June 21.
