Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency such as Orbitz or Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. However, if you’re using The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through the Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.
Southwest is offering one of its famous flash sales. This time, you can find one-way flights from a number of Southwest cities throughout the carrier's route network from $49. What makes this flash sale so appealing is that many peak winter holiday travel dates are included.
Keep in mind that where this sale can become especially valuable is with existing reservations. If you have a reservation booked with Southwest and see that it's decreased in price since originally purchased, you can request the difference in fare with no change fees. Since Southwest award redemptions are tied to the ticket's price, this could be a great time to use Southwest miles for a cheap trip.
The terms and conditions state that you must book by Oct. 4, 2018. Eligible travel dates are between Nov. 28 and Dec. 19, 2018, as well as between Jan. 3 and Feb. 13, 2019. Unfortunately, you can't search for cheap Southwest flights via Google Flights. Instead, you'll have to head directly to Southwest.com and enter the route you're looking for. The easiest way to find the cheapest flights is by using the Low Fare Calendar tool.
