If you want to earn more Marriott points and have one or more Marriott Bonvoy credit cards, you may find Marriott's new promotion helpful. The new "It's in the cards" promotion lets members with eligible cobranded Marriott cards earn more points on their spending this summer.

The first step is to enroll your eligible card on Marriott's website by Aug. 10. Once you've enrolled your card, you can earn 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after spending $7,000 in eligible purchases on that card by Sept. 30. Purchases must post to your account by Sept. 30 to qualify.

Most U.S.-issued Marriott Bonvoy credit cards are eligible for this promotion, including:

  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card

Chase and American Express each have different card terms for this promotion. For Chase, here are some key aspects to keep in mind:

  • Your Marriott Bonvoy credit card must have been issued before June 21, 2023,
  • Bonus points may take eight to 12 weeks from when you meet the spending threshold to post on your Marriott Bonvoy account,
  • Purchases made by authorized users count, but only the primary account member will receive the bonus.
  • You can only earn 10,000 bonus points once per registered card.
  • If you elect to earn miles instead of points in your Marriott Bonvoy account, you aren't eligible for this promotion.
AMERICAN EXPRESS

And for American Express, here are some key terms and conditions to consider:

  • Enrollment only extends to the basic cardmember (not any authorized user cards). Spending across multiple cards can not be pooled.
  • Only purchases made in U.S. dollars will count.
  • Bonus points may take 90 days from Sept. 30 to post on your Marriott Bonvoy account.

It's also worth considering whether this promotion is worthwhile. Especially if you don't think you'd spend $7,000 on your card before Sept. 30, you may be better off using one of the best everyday spending cards for purchases in categories that typically won't earn bonus points. After all, you won't earn the 10,000 bonus Marriott points if you don't meet the $7,000 spending threshold.

But, if you recently applied for a new Marriott credit card and are working toward meeting the minimum spending requirements for the welcome offer or sign-up bonus, enrolling in this promotion could make a lot of sense. Likewise, if you plan to spend a lot on your Marriott credit card in the next few months, enrolling in this promotion and striving to meet the $7,000 spending threshold during the promotional period could be smart.

Bottom line

Marriott's new "it's in the cards" promotion won't make sense for every cardholder. However, it's worth considering how much you'd spend through Sept. 30 on your Marriott Bonvoy card and assessing what type of return you usually get from your everyday spending card. Especially if you're planning to spend a few thousand dollars on your Marriott Bonvoy card between now and Sept. 30 and you don't have a high-return everyday spending card, this promotion might be worth enrolling in and using.
