Get 30% off Southwest flights between Hawaii and the US mainland
Editor's Note
Southwest Airlines is offering a discount on flights from select continental U.S. cities to the Hawaiian Islands for travel between Aug. 11 and Sept. 30 to celebrate five years of servicing the Aloha State.
This 30% discount applies to flights purchased with either cash or points. All you need to do is use the code "5YEARS" when booking.
You need to act fast before this deal says "aloha."

Sample flights
Let's say you want to spend six nights in Honolulu in September. If you travel from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), there are many solid options, including nonstop routes.
After you choose your dates, enter "5YEARS" in the promo code box. Alternatively, you can use Southwest's low-fare calendar to find discounted dates that work best for you.

You'll see the discount reflected in Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares. For this example, I found nonstop flights for just $163 each way before taxes and fees. Normally, they would cost $222 each way.
The overall price for the round-trip journey would be about $325, including taxes and fees.

These prices apply to Southwest's most basic Wanna Get Away fare. These tickets come with one carry-on bag and two checked bags. They are not refundable, but you can receive credit for the flight as long as you cancel at least 10 minutes before the flight's original scheduled departure time.
Also note that the discount gets applied before the taxes and fees are included, and the sale doesn't apply to interisland travel. However, we did find interisland flights for as low as $29 each way during our searches.
Below are the U.S. mainland-to-Hawaii routes that Southwest flies.

Maximize your purchase
Use the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card (see rates and fees) to book and earn 4 Rapid Rewards points per dollar spent on Southwest purchases.
Or, use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees): 2 points per dollar spent on travel
- American Express® Gold Card: 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly through the airline or through amextravel.com
- The Platinum Card® from American Express: 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly through the airline or American Express Travel® (on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees): 8 points per dollar on all Chase Travel℠ purchases and 4 points per dollar on flights booked directly through the airline
- Citi Strata Premier® Card (see rates and fees): 3 points per dollar spent on air travel
Bottom line
Getting 30% off flights to Hawaii from the continental U.S. is as easy as entering the code "5YEARS" when booking on Southwest. Make sure to research how to travel responsibly around Hawaii, including how to honor the local culture and respect the islands' beautiful natural features.
