The home of port wine, pastel de nata, medieval castles and dazzling beaches, Portugal is a vibrant country that’s definitely worth visiting. Luckily for Americans looking to jet off to this European gem, you can find fares to Portugal for as low as $381 from January to March.

In particular, you can fly to the cities of Lisbon — Portugal’s capital — and Porto at cheap prices from many different places in the U.S., ranging from large cities like New York to smaller ones like Memphis.

These low prices are only expected to last for a couple of days, so snag your tickets as quickly as you can.

Sample flights

With this slew of discounted flights, the cheapest fares are concentrated around the New York, Boston and Washington, D.C., areas. From there, you can get fares for less than $400. Otherwise, if you’re flying out from the South, Midwest or the West Coast, the fares mostly fall below $600. Many of the flights also have at least one layover.

Here are some flights we thought were noteworthy:

  • Aer Lingus: Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), starting at $381 (includes a layover in Dublin).
  • TAP: Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), starting at $382.
  • Aer Lingus: O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to LIS, starting at $423 (includes a layover in Dublin).
  • Delta and KLM: Dallas Love Field (DAL) to OPO, starting at $513 (includes layovers in Atlanta and Amsterdam).
  • United and Lufthansa: Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) to OPO, starting at $556 (includes layovers in Denver and Brussels).
  • Aer Lingus: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to LIS, starting at $580 (includes a layover in Dublin).
  • United: Indianapolis International Airport (IND) to LIS, starting at $585 (includes a layover in Newark).

When booking your flights, we suggest searching through Google Flights to find your ideal dates, and then booking directly with the airline of your choice. Airlines are more reliable in the event of a delay, cancellation or booking change.

For a winter vacation from Newark to Porto, a TAP flight on Feb. 23 is the cheapest option, according to Google Flights. This flight is a red-eye option; it takes off from Newark at 12:15 a.m. and arrives in Porto at 11:55 a.m.

To return to Newark, TAP offers two options at the $396 price point: One leaves Porto at 10 a.m. and the other at 4 p.m. Both returning flight options have a layover in Lisbon.

Since Google Flights also aggregates third-party booking options, there can be price discrepancies between Google Flights and the airline’s website. For this particular trip, Google Flights says the fare costs $375, but if you were to book directly with TAP, it would cost slightly more. (Google Flights says TAP is charging $401, but the website says the fare is around $382.)

All of these discounted fares to Portugal apply to basic economy. TAP’s Discount price only allows passengers to bring a carry-on; all other add-ons such as seat selection and checked luggage have additional fees.

For a flight to Porto, seat selection starts at $45, and the most expensive and roomier seats on the aircraft cost $72. As for returning flights, the cheapest available seats cost $14.

Checking your first bag will also cost an additional $80; a second bag will cost another $105. If you’re only bringing one bag, you will end up paying a total of $160 to check it to and from Porto.

Bottom line

Since so many airlines have marked down fares to Porto and Lisbon for the winter in 2023, now is a great time to book your flights to these historic cities.

You can sample different port wines in Porto or stroll through the castles of Lisbon, all while avoiding the crowds of tourists that visit in the warmer months. There are many things to do in Portugal, so book these tickets ASAP before flights fill up and fare prices increase.
