Based on a test search conducted for this story, you can actually find one-way ticket fares for even lower than advertised. For example, you can book a round-trip journey from New York to Philadelphia over July 4 for $118, with a discounted coach seat on the way there and a discounted business-class Acela seat on the return.

This sale offers discounts of at least 25% off sale fares, noted with a green sale indicator at the top. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of your fare, as all sale fares are nonrefundable and charge a 50% cancellation fee.

Business-class seats are available on Acela trains only, which are faster and feature extra legroom.

Sale fares are not available to book with Amtrak Guest Rewards points.
